As promised to a curious poster here I took some pictures around Summerville. Keep in mind: 1. I am not a professional photographer and 2. It is wintertime and things aren't as green and full as they should be. 3. It was kinda difficult to get some shots without stopping in the middle of traffic, so some of the shots were taken on the go. So with that said, they are not the best pictures in the world, but hopefully you'll get the gist of it. Oh yeah, the last 3 I took were in downtown Charleston and thought I would just throw them in for good measure.

Various shops and restaurants located in the downtown Summerville area:

Default Summerville is Great!

Great pictures! We moved here last summer. Currently living off of Dorchester Road in North Charleston, but moving into our new home in less than 4 weeks in Legend Oaks. We are thrilled with the DD2 school district. I have one on elementary and one in middle school. Although it's been cold here lately, the weather is superb!

This area has so much to offer. My ONLY complaint since moving here is the driving skills (or lack thereof) of people. My insurance rates increased by over $400 just moving here and have since learned that SC has some of the highest rates in the country.

I would love to start some kind of public awareness program encouraging people to stop running the yellow/red lights. (It's pretty bad when you have 2 and 3 cars still racing through the intersection after the lights turn RED). And, encouraging people to PLEASE use their turn signals.

When we can limit the number of accidents -- which I see at least once a day at intersections in the North Charleston / Summerville area -- ALL of us will benefit physically (safer!); mentally (less stress due to sitting in accident traffic); and financially (lower rates over time!).

Cheers!

What great Pictures!!! We're going down to South Carolina next month to search around a few different areas in the state to possibly move. After seeing the pics of Summerville I am even more excited to see the area. We're going to stay in Charleston the first night and look at Mount Pleasant, Summerville, and Monks Corner/ Goose Creek areas the next day before heading towards the Columbia area the next 2 days, and then up to Greenville/Spartanburg areas our last day. We want to make sure we pick the right area for us if we decide to move.

Default Thanks also from a new member!

I too enjoyed seeing your photographs. (Stayed on Hassell St for a week I now have 350 of downtown Charleston LOL so don't need help there.) I found a cute affordable duplex in East Side downtown online. But I doubt this is in a good area.

I'd love to see more of Summerville and any of the outer, more affordable areas in Charleston. I, too, loved the Mt Pleasant area but it seems very pricey and congested.

We plan to retire in that area in a few years and I'm beginning to think we just can't afford it. I need someone to show me differently.

I explored the Mt Pleasant area and the James/John Island area while I was there a week ago. James and John Island seem to be more rural (which is what we live in now). I was disappointed in Folly Beach. The prices they listed were NOT in line with the area real estate. But I wasn't able to see any of West Ashley or N charleston or Ladson, Summerville or Goose Creek.

After being used to living outside the city limits on acreage with large trees, I crave privacy and some of those beautiful old live oaks.. maybe John's Island is the answer??

Thanks for any insights from those who live in the area. (btw.. I was actually born there in 1949.. )

Well thanks everyone. That's what we liked about Summerville. It is quaint, historic and slower paced. It's not flashy or trying to put on airs. The people are friendly and welcoming. You can just live here and be yourself.

Maryjane, Summerville is a tree haven. The trees in Summerville are protected by law dating back to 1847 and it is still on the books and they enforce it! They do everything they can to leave as many trees in place when planning a neighborhood or business. It is still relatively affordable here, but I can't say how much longer it will last. It seems to have been discovered. You will find James/John's Island to be pricier.

I'll try and get more pics for ya.

p.s. I would be a little leary of that east side in Charleston right now. They definitely have issues in that area.

Great Pictures, we ate in town at a cafe by the train tracks and the food was great and affordable. After reading this forum for a while I have found you to be very knowledgeable and helpful to all who have written. Our family will be relocating to the summerville area soon. We've chosen Myers Mill as our destination, after touring the surrounding areas (Moncks Corner, Goose Creek and other summerville locations). I am hoping you will be able to recommend a pediatrician as well as a dentist in the area.

Wink Pictures of Summerville

The pictures are great. We have been to Summerville 2 times in the last few months. Am moving into the DelWebb community of 176. Our home will be finished in Dec. Can hardly wait We loved the area from the start and have been looking for a while...mostly in Florida. Didn't like it there. Summerville has so much to offer. We're coming from Cape Cod MA just as soon as our house is sold.

I live in the Toledo, Ohio area and running red lights is so common here that the running joke is "How do you know a Toledo driver? He's the third one through on the red light". Sounds like we will be right at home in Summerville....
