Required Charleston water inspection?
Has anyone gotten a letter in the mail from the water company requesting an inspection since we recently purchased this home? I'm not familiar with this..

from what I understand, there is a list of inspectors included with the letter, and that I have to schedule one to come out and inspect, pay them myself, and all within a 30-day time frame or something like that. I've never had to do this before. They say it is "standard."

That makes absolutely no sense. Are you on a well or city water? Never mind, makes even less sense if you were on well-water. How much are the contractors asking for the inspection? Is the home new construction? What did your realtor say when you showed them the letter?

It's the Charleston Water System. Says because it's a new home purchase, it's required. The house is only 2-3 years old. Best part is, I've lost the paper that has the 50+ inspectors names on there. Kinda weird. I'm sure they'll try and fine me somehow since I didn't have this done. I'm not exactly sure why I would have to pay for it...

The only thing I can think of is that the home is in a neighborhood that is connected to city water, but is not connected to city sewer and is on septic instead. The water company might need an inspection done either because they're going through the process of connecting to city sewer, or they need to check the septic connection though I can't imagine why they would make -you- pay for that.
Call and confirm, but that's the -only- reason I know of why you'd be required to have an inspection.

The only fee I've seen was really a fine for not being able to access the meter. $50 for the second offense.
That would not have a list of inspectors attached.
Let us know, I'm curious.

It's not the backflow preventer annual test is it? Do you have a lawn sprinkler system?
