They will be flying alright. You will be throwing them in the air from frustration.

Take it from a Florida boy who worked out near Lake Okeechobee/Swamp and lived right on the rural border between the city and the swamp I would not worry much about gators! They would sun themselves along roadside drainage ditches, cannals and gravel roads.
Water Mocassans are very agressive, they would often try to jump in fishing boats in and around the lake and along many of the rivers and cannals. They are nasty and should be killed whenever possible but do not try unless you have no other choice. Don't try to move in on it since they don't shy away, but if given the opportunity kill it or it will bite you, just make a good judgement call. Decide if you can run or need to stand your ground with a heavy sharp implement and act quickly.
Also do not mistake them with the common black snake or Indigo snake, those are good snakes (mice and such are their food source) and will actually eat a rattle snake, I have seen photos of that happening. Don't know about here but in FL killing an Indigo means a fine and also possible jail time.

In Florida we have a surplus of alligators. The one thing I wish people would remember is DON'T FEED THEM!!!!! We have idiots here who feed them and then can't understand why the alligator went after their dog or family. I stay away from any water that isn't a pool. And even the pool I will look into it before diving in. Alligators have been found in peoples' pools.
Just teach your kids to stay away from them

I just had a meeting with the guys that manage the lakes and alligators on Kiawah. I hadn't heard anything about this story. Can you be more specific about the date and location? Typically things of that magnitude are reported.

Depends on where you are Kayaking?
If you go up into the shallows and along creek and lake banks you may run into Water Moccasins more than gators.

My parents live on Ellis Creek on James Island, and rutinely get gators in different neighbors pools. I can remember when they pulled a 12 footer outta the neighbors pool one afternoon when I was riding my bike home after middle school...
