Where exactly is the paper mill?
Will soon be relocating to Charleston, and being a native of Jacksonville, I want to be sure to avoid any area close to the papermill smell. Kids are in college, so schools are not a concern. Would like to be close to downtown area if possible but price range would be under 250,000. Work is in 29405 zip code. Any information is greatly appreciated.

At the intersection 526 and the Cooper River, along the coast of North Charleston.

You can smell it primarily in North Charleston (not all areas) and on Daniel Island...depending on which way the wind is blowing and how cloudy it is outside. You can't really smell it downtown...with $250K range, maybe look in West Ashley.

I'd look at West Ashley or James Island if I were you, far from the paper mill and close enough to your work.... that area code is in a rough area of N.Chas but WA and JI have some very nice areas in them around your price range... I'd offer a lot less than what people are asking for homes and see what they counter, deals are to be had these days

Thanks so much for the helpful info. Traffic wise would West Ashley or James Island be the better choice to Faber place drive?

West Ashley is closer than James Island. It's a simple hop onto 526 and around to Faber.

Human Health Hazards -- Pulp and Paper Industry Odors
Here's some info...its not dangerous but can cause some minor irritation in some circumstances (depending on weather...its worse on cloudy days and so is the smell.) Not really anything to worry about unless you work outside close to the factory.

When I was a child, the Paper Mill odor was stifling at times. On a cloudy day, you could not escape it in the "North Area". Westvaco spent millions of dollars to filter the output and what you smell now is a far cry from what it was. It is within the guidelines laid out by the Federal Government. I believe the "smell" itself is sulfur.
