from TV to PR- jobs in Charleston???
Hi everyone! I know there are a thousand posts about jobs on this forum, but I have yet another one.... so here goes:
I'm a TV reporter in another state, but our lease is up in October and we're planning on moving and settling in Charleston (We live in the south now. We're from the north east, & always vacationed in both of the Carolinas and completely loved them).
But the main issue is that I'm planning on switching careers (to a PR, Communication Specialist, Copywriter, or Advertising position).
I've been looking on the typical job websites (and found some new ones to check thanks to other posts), but the listings for PR/Communication positions seem to be few and far between. I've also tried sending e-mails to the PR companies, but I'm not having much luck. Are there any PR recruiting firms?
If anyone has any suggestions to help me find something in these fields, please let me know!!! On top of my year as a TV reporter, I have a BA in Communication, a Master's in Broadcast Journalism & Mass Communication. I know there has to be something out there for me, it's just tough to find the openings!
I appreciate everyone's help in advance.

Thanks, I appreciate the suggestion. But, I am actually trying to switch careers- I don't want to work in TV anymore. I want a more stable life. I don't want to live my life based on breaking news!
So, I'm trying to start a career in public relations or as a communications specialist. Does anyone have any suggestions, or know of any openings (either at a PR/Marketing firm, or with a private company)?
As I mentioned, we're moving to Charleston in October (we could move sooner if a good opportunity popped up), and I need to find a job before we get there.
Thanks! =)

Good luck. I have a PR firm in the Upstate of SC.
The best jobs, in my opinion, are not with the agencies but directly with the larger corporations with global branches. I would contact the Chamber of Commerce, ask for a list of the major employers in the area, research the ones with global locations and then start cold calling the HR departments AFTER YOU HAVE DONE YOUR RESEARCH. I would also really push to see if you could BRING BY a resume rather than sending it in. (if you can make arrangements to be in the area for a scouting trip) That makes a huge impact. I started my career with Warner Lambert internally many, many years ago. People who work for agencies generally have much more pressure, fewer benefits and higher burnout rate. Conversely, once people get the corp jobs, they hand onto those so there are fewer openings and you may have to start at a lower entry level position and wait for your break.
Good luck and God bless.

Hi everyone, so here's my latest plan:
-My boyfriend will transfer with his job.
-I'll continue trying to find something in PR before we get to Charleston. So far, I've gotten some pretty positive responses, but there don't seem to be many openings (but I think being in a different state might deter some employers from hiring me).
-I'll make arrangements with a temp agency to try to work full-time through them until I find something permanent.
I really think the temp agency could be a good solution. It would allow us to move to SC, be able to tell our rental office exactly when we'll be moving (our lease is almost up), start looking for a new place in SC, allow our friends who will be helping us move to book a flight, and finally (perhaps most importantly) put me in Charleston - allowing me to interview and take a job immediately.
Okay, what do you all think?

Yahoo! That's the one I was planning to use. That makes me feel better. I hope to find something permanent quickly, but I'm thrilled to have something in case it takes longer than expected!
