I'm sure Bessinger's serves good food, but how do the locals feel about it? Are they a local hot spot or more of a tourist magnet?

Do they have the West Ashley/Savannah Hwy market sewn up...or would that same stretch of highway be able to support a competitive bbq joint? Not anything really comparable to Bessinger's, but just a simple take-out/drive thru place. Basics only...3-4 meats and the same amount of sides.

Thanks for the local knowlege.

Jay

I think Bessinger's in West Ashley is filthy and gross. But, Melvins is totally clean and delish.

Definitely would like another option in that area. Make sure to have great sides as many vegetarians get dragged to those places and are forced to have mac n' cheese!

Bessingers is pretty good, also try the BBQ place on 61 at carriage lane. Or Momma browns in Mt Pleasant, on coleman. If your are going to go for it this area is known for mustard base sauses. Florence area vinager.
good luck

Good point on the mustard base sauce.

But, I'm wondering if it wouldn't be nice to have something different?

Don't worry...I've got a mustard base that'll knock your socks off...plus a vinegar & a nice semi-thin red. None of them are what I'd consider 'sweet' although the mustard one does have a noticeable sugar content. All my sauces have a bit of a kick...unlike some of the really sweet ones you get around there. I do think variety is nice.

Thanks for the comments so far. I'm weighing my options and looking for a good location.

Jay

West Ashley has a number of BBQ places. Home Team BBQ on 61/St.Andrews seems to be doing great (less than 2 miles from Bessingers) and always a packed lunch crowd.

Moneyhuns failed over here on Clements Farry Rd, and another one opened up in the same spot. I don't understand why someone would open a shop in a spot where a previous spot failed offering the same product?

I work out here near Nucor Steel and all we have out here is Miss Libby's country cookin....

I would consider the Market area downtown. I stand to be corrected, but other than Sticky Fingers, I don't believe there's any other BBQ places in the Market area. Some years back, Bessingers used to have a place in the Market. Higher rent but lots of foot traffic.

There was/is another BBQ place on King street. I can't remember the name though.
