Summerville Neighborhoods
Hope you all can help...we are looking to relocate to the greater Charleston area in the next year or so from New Hampshire (just had a huge nor'easter...need I say more?!) We are coming down to the area for April school vacation to golf and look around.
I've been looking on the internet at real estate, towns, etc. and am leaning toward Summerville...Any feedback regarding good vs not-so-good subdivisions/neighborhoods (ie: White Gables, Legend Oaks, etc.) would be much appreciated. We are coming from a much smaller (40 house) subdivision up north which has a great sense of community.
My children will be attending public schools, so any comments on that as well would be appreciated (have heard Dorchester II schools are good - we are coming from an area with a very good public school system).
Also (sorry, I know-long winded! , how long of a commute to MUSC in Charlston?
Thanks in advance for all the great feedback!

White Gables and Legend Oaks are fairly new neighborhoods, both have homes in various price ranges. I could give you more neighborhood selections if I knew your budget. New neighborhoods are sprouting up in all price ranges around Summerville. Plus there are several older neighborhoods that are very nice as well.
MUSC is about a 45 minute ride give or take.

Thanks for the info scjj!
Our price range is up to about $275k; we are primarily looking at newer neighborhoods (like newer construction, but don't like the hassle of building!)
Any further info/help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you that helps a lot.

Ashborough - older, mature, but still nice

Bridges of Summerville
Good luck!

Thanks again for the heads up! Most of the neighborhoods you mentioned have made my short list based on what I have seen on line...makes me feel much better to have a second opinion!

HS varies
From what I understand you want to be in the Summerville HS neighborhoods. Legend Oaks is in that district, I know

How many High Schools in Summerville?
You are right, high school is important in that we have two little ones that will be attending in about 8yrs.
Just how many high schools are there in Summerville and, in fact, is the one by Legend Oaks the best?
While the city we are relocating from is large, we only have one high school (albeit with 1600 students!), so this is VERY confusing to me!
Again everyone, thanks for all the feedback!

There are two high schools within Dorchester District 2, Summerville High and Fort Dorchester. Fort Dorchester sits just outside the city limits of North Charleston. It actually has a North Charleston address but it is considered part of Dorchester County. If you lived in Wescott or the Bridges of Summerville your kids would go to Fort Dorchester.
A new high school (Ashley Ridge) is under construction near Legend Oaks and will open in the fall of 2008. Summerville high school is the largest high school in the state of SC with over 3,300 students. It has an excellent reputation both academically and athletically. When the new high school opens it will reduce Summerville Highs student population by 1,000.

My wife and I just moved into the Summerville area last month and have been very happy in the Farm at Wescott Plantation. Everything is rather close by and very nice. I would love to have the money to do IOP or I'on as we just visited there this weekend, but we are very happy with Wescott.
scjj, is there any thing special that you can tell us about the area that isn't in the usual guide? I think I have seen the areas of N. Charleston to avoid, but moving here from buffalo, ny... not much fazes me.

Pardon me...
Sorry...what is IOP and I'on? Is it local abbreviations that I'm just not familiar with?
We have been looking at Wesctcott as well; like the looks of the homes. Can all neighborhoods in Westcott have access to the golf course and wha't it like? My husband is a HUGE golfer!
Any opinions on the Glen at Somerset? Just saw some listings...
Thanks!
