My wife and I are relocating to Charleston at the end of the year from NYC area. We are looking forward to the "slower" lifestyle and trying to blend in.
Can you recommend some areas to live that we would be able to walk to places eat or have a drink? We are looking at in order:
1. Downtown
2. Mt. Pleasant
3. Daniel Island
4. James Island
We will both be working from home, so being able to get out and walk to "things to do" is important.
Is it possible to find a place downtown under 350K with at least 3 bedrooms?
You can live on the Charleston peninsula in a 3 bedroom for under $350k, yes. You'll be in neighborhoods like Wagener Terrace, Hampton Park, and North Central. You'll likely find more house for your money on James Island and West Ashley though. Some neighborhoods in those areas would be less than 5 minutes to downtown, but could still be fairly close to bars, restaurants, shopping, etc.
A quick handful of examples would be neighborhoods like Westwood, Parkshore, Charlestowne Estates, Northbridge, Sandhurst and even smaller homes in Byrnes Down in West Ashley.
Thanks DJShymansky. Are the neighborhoods like Wagener Terrace, Hampton Park, and North Central safe areas? We are currently in a "city" atmosphere now, but would my wife feel safe walking around these areas?
I think you would be limited in your choices of 3 bedroom single family homes in good condition and of descent size in the under $350,000 range in Hampton Terrace, Wagener Terrace and on Daniel Island. You would have a ton of choices in Mt. Pleasant. I agree with DJSyhmansky that West Ashley would give you a fair number of options.
naes, I am also relocating to Charleston area from NYC - Brooklyn to be exact! Probably the lst part of 09 is when I plan on heading "back home" so to speak. Actually from Charlotte, NC but moved to NY several yrs ago. Have relatives in NC and SC. Was guided to the Summerville, Goose Creek, Ladson area. Summerville looks really nice but it is further away from Charleston proper. Good luck with your relocation efforts!
