Moncks Corner, the Reader's Digest Version
I live in AL, and was hoping someone might know a little bit about Moncks Corner. This is the deal-The wife and I aren't moving for another year and half to two years (grad school getting master's in social work), and have been considering Summerville for a possible move. What attracts us to Summerville is that it has nice homes, is family friendly, has enough restaurants, activities, shopping, hospitals, etc. to keep us happy, and is close enough to Charleston for work and play. We enjoyed it when we visited. I don't really know anything about Moncks Corner, and want an honest opinion on how it fairs to a place like Summerville. I have seen nice homes, and it seems fairly rural, which is nice. I guess what I am worried about is ending up like my in-laws, who live in Jefferson, GA. They have a nice house, nice land, and it is quiet and private and beautiful, but there are no amenities. They have to drive 15 minutes to go grocery shopping, and have to drive to Athens for any major medical work. If you had to give the Reader's Digest version of Moncks Corner, what would it sound like? Thanks in advance for any help given.

Monks Corner has a supper Wal-Mart, atleast one grocery store and by the time you get here in 1.5~2 years should be filling in nicely. You will still need to drive to N. Charleston or Summerville for any major shoping and I think all they have is a satelite medical center. But who know what will happen in two years.

Actually MC has 2 Food Lions and a Piggly Wiggly.
MC is rural but it's growing. It doesn't have the ammenities like S'Ville has but if you like boating the lake is right there. We lived there for 7 yrs, left in 1994. There is a Roper medical center and a Trident medical center there. OTC is correct, for major shopping you will need to drive to NChas or S'Ville. During non rush hour it will take you approx 50 minutes to drive to downtown Charleston.

50 min., huh? Do you know how far Summerville is from Charleston? It has been a while since I visited. Also, any inkling as to what the schools are like? I am realistic enough to realize that not all schools are perfect, and it is up to the parent to help fill in the gaps. I just worry about danger, and whether or not it is terribly terrible. Moncks Corner doesn't strike me as a dangerous area. Being from Birmingham, I am used to certain parts being responsible for, like, 80% of the crime. Is Monck's Corner similar to that?
Also, if I may on an unrelated topic, how would one compare Monck's Corner to Goose Creek? Are they similar in regards to ruralness, amenities, crime, etc.?

It will depend where you are looking in S'Ville. During non rush hour 30-40 minutes.
A good many people send their children to St John's Christian School. A friend of mine sent her daughter there through 8th grade. The daughter wanted to go to Berkeley High, which is the high school for that area, and enjoys it. During the time we lived there crime wasn't a problem and I don't think it is now. My DH's family is from that area and hasn't ever had a problem either. As with any place there are good area's as well as bad.
I live in GC now and like being closer to ammenities. During non rush hour it takes me about 25 minutes to get downtown. MC is definately more rural than GC because it's further inland. We have lived in GC for 4 yrs and haven't had any problems with crime. If you are looking in GC I would suggest looking at Crowfield Plantation, that's where we live and enjoy it very much.

Goose Creek sounds nice. What can you tell me about it? What do you enjoy about it, what are your favorites/not so favorites, what do you do for entertainment, night out with loved ones, etc.? Is it pretty family friendly, and how are the amenities different than that of Monk's Corner? Is it more similar to Summerville?

If your comparing schools between the three areas (Goose creek, Summerville and Monks Corner) Summerville (dorch 2)wins- no contest. If you can afford private schools then it does not matter.
There is crime in all these areas, but when you see the neighborhoods you can compare and get a feeling for where you'd want to be.
Monks corner would be the furthest away from stuff to do but it is a growing area so who knows what it will be like in 2 years. Goose Creek and Summerville are closer to shopping and downtown.

Are New yorkers infesting Moncks Corner also? My job is tranferring me to Charleston but I've heard a lot of the New Yorkers have taken up ground there. I went through that here in South Florida where every other person is a rude, non driving, self absorbed Yorker.

Every post you have is a pointless, insulting rant about how you do not like New York. Get over yourself already.

With an attitude like that, I think you'll have problems wherever you go.
Have you thought that "every other person is [a] rude" because of your interactions with people? You're rubbed at least 2 people on this forum the wrong way.
Your negativity only inspires hostility. Try saying/doing something kind - you'll get a lot farther and more in-depth responses.
I hope your move to Charleston is pleasant and you find a way to leave your negativity behind.
