Goose Creek, Someone! Anyone!
Alright, I know it seems like I have the same exact questions for a different location every other week. This is the deal--Wife and I are moving from AL in about 1 1/2-2 years. At first we thought Myrtle Beach, but the reality of no job security and major summer and spring traffic is a bit scary. Then we thought Columbia, but as metro as it is, it is a bit further from the water than we would like to be. So, after visiting Charleston and looking into job prospects, we have decided that we would like to be around that area. Problem is, Charleston is too expensive for us, and we don't know enough about the area to know where to avoid for safety purposes. We have looked into Summerville, which seems like a nice option. I would just like to know more about Goose Creek. We are seeking a family friendly environment, parks to walk dogs and children to play in, close supermarkets, Wal-Marts, etc., movie theaters, decent restaurants, an occasional concert or show, and a major medical center or two. I know Summerville has the better schools, but as long as the schools are not horrible I feel that we can make up for anything lacking in our children's education. I also know all places have some danger to them, and just want a place where the good outweighs the bad. Please be honest. Thanks.

The link I posted for Crowfield Plantation is a family environment. There is a walking trail throughout the plantation that is used for walking, biking, and many people walk their dogs. There is also a park for the kids and a few pools that you can join. There is a Walmart and a new Lowe's about a couple miles away. Grocery stores at the current time is Publix and Bilo. At the municipal center they do have outdoor concerts a few times a year with a fireworks display afterwards. Roper Hospital has a small medical center here but about 5 miles away is Trident Hospital. We also have a county library that has children's activities. The only downside is restaurants. We have a few small ones but nothing to brag about. However you will be about 5 miles from Northwood's Mall that does have several restaurants around it. Not the kind you would find downtown though, they are mostly chain restaurants.
Coming to GC in the next 2 yrs. will be a new theater, bowling alley, Harris Teeter grocery store and hopefully more restaurants. Most of Crowfield goes to Westview schools with the exception of the Hamlets, they go to College Park schools. I enjoy living in GC and couldn't picture myself living anywhere else in Charleston. Here are a few links to check out.

Goose creek IS close to shopping. It is just about 5 minutes to malls and shoppes in North Charleston. And everyone here drives to the bowling alley, down town, beaches, etc. It's not that far to anything.
Not sure your price range but another good family neighborhood is Liberty Hall Plantation. Prices are low.

Sounds good. I am curious about something--I hear that Goose Creek is only a few minutes from N Charleston, and it seems like there are a lot of people advising against N Charleston, and that it is dangerous and not very family friendly. With this in mind, does it mean that Goose Creek is also dangerous? And, if people shop in N Charleston, then does that mean that the closest shopping areas are in dangerous locations? I know there are dangerous pockets everywhere, it's just that if you aren't real familiar with the area then it is hard to know where the bad pockets are.

Yes GC is close to NCHS, however its close to the nicer part of NCHS. Like every town there are good spots and bad spots. IMO I dont think GC is dangerous at all. The St James area is beautiful from Hwy 52 all the way through the Crowfield area. Look @ all the links that Luvsdabeach posted, she's right on even though she has bad taste in her race car driver

Don't make me hunt you down the next time I see you at Publix. lol My boy did a couple of nice flips last week didn't he?
I have never felt unsafe in GC or in NC while shopping. And yes, there are more amenities coming to the area. Another area you may want to check out is Cane Bay Plantation.

Thanks for all the helpful input. I was wondering something--about how far away are the beaches from Goose Creek and Summerville?

From GC it takes me 25 minutes to get to Isle of Palms. Mostly because of traffic signals.
