Dorchester County Schools II
Summerville High School has 3,500 students in the school!!! O my goodness! I graduated with about 450 which is a big class but holy crap! Are there going to be any new buildings put up in Dorchester County Schools? I am a middle school teacher wanting to get a job in the district. Is a new high school going to open up so many teachers move from the middle schools to the high school? Any new middle schools opening?

They opened up Ashley Ridge High School (Dor. II Dist.) this year - started off this year with Freshmen & Sophomores (I think), then next year will have Fresh. Soph. & Junior... the following year, Fresh., Soph. Jun & Seniors. So that should relieve the other high schools in Dorchester II District. I believe they decided to not build any more schools in the Dorchester District for now -- but I could be incorrect on that.

Eagle Nest Elementary, River Oaks Middle School and Ashley Ridge High School are all brand new schools that opened at the beginning of the school year in Dorchester District 2.

Do you think teachers will be in demand for next school year then? Or are teachers always simply in high demand?

Teachers are always in a high demand, there are always more openings than there are teachers.

Dorchester Schools resisted dividing the high school for years, simply because Summerville High School football was a force in the State and Coach McKissick is the winningest coach in US high school history. Believe what you like, but that was the bottom line. The pressure finally topped out and Fort Dorchester High School was formed. From the outset, FDHS has been overcrowded. It is a good school, don't get me wrong. It was just overwhelmed from the start. The new high school mentioned above will lessen that burden somewhat, but like so many things around here, the population explosion is just outrunning the infrastructure. No reason to point fingers.. it's just the unexpected popularity of the tricountry area in the past decade has been unprecedented.
The need for teachers should not lessen any time soon in the Dorchester II District.

Overcrowded schools has been a problem in every community I have lived in during the last 20 years. It is expensive to build schools and when they finally get the funds, and get a new one built....the area around has grown ans trailers are already needed.
Interesting to hear about the 'football' issue. Wish it was more about academics here in the south. Football reigns. Don't get me wrong. We enjoyed high school football and am loving the college football experience. It just seems wrong sometimes when you realize how important it is in the schools, compared to the real purpose of school -- 'academics'.

Fort Dorchester High is a great school. There have been some new middle schools and a new high school built in the past couple of years. There aren't any on the building block as we speak that I have heard about. There is a low scale recruitment fair for DD2 in March, but they aren't hiring a lot of teachers....we too have felt the economy. It is my understanding that they are interviewing mainly middle/high teachers. Hope that helps
