Smile Career working with dogs in Charleston?

Hi! I am a former English teacher with a master's degree in education. I am currently living in Bluffton, SC but would like to move to Charleston. My passion in life is dogs and I want to make a career out of working with them. I support myself, so I need to make at least 50k per year. I have a lot of debt from grad school, so opening my own business is not feasible. I am not good with blood, math, or science so the vet field is out and grooming doesn't appeal to me. Does anyone have any suggestions of where I could work in Charleston with dogs and make money? Thanks!!

You could try getting a job at a doggie daycare. It's probably not going to pay $50k unless you can open your own business or go in with someone, but I am friends with the owner of My Three Dogs in Mt. Pleasant and she has done VERY well in a short period of time! People in Charleston really love their dogs. There are also many boutique shops - Doolittles, Palmetto Paws, etc. and maybe you could talk with them. I'm sure they would have ideas. Obedience, treat making, clothing, dog walking. I posted a dog walking ad on Craigslist and got 2 calls within a month but that's all I did. I didn't advertise any other way. It was just for fun. There are also people downtown that like to have their dogs walked. Dog walking is something that Charleston needs more of. You could also check into Lowcountry Dog magazine to see if they have an opening for writing or event planning or something. There's always the shelters which would be very sad, hard work but it is working with sweet, needy dogs. There are many rescue groups as well. Maybe some combination of all of these things will help you meet dog people in Charleston and lead to something else. Good luck and whatever you do, don't forget to volunteer!!
