No Flouride in Charleston County Water
I received an email from my dentist yesterday informing me that we do not have fluoride in our water. For all you parents out there thought it was good information to know. My dentist recommends adding 1 cup of flouride enriched water to your child's diet.
"Charleston Water System Temporarily Suspending Water Fluoridation
Fluoride tank at water treatment plant out of service; will be replaced summer 2009
(November 25, 2008)—Charleston Water System won’t be adding trace amounts of fluoride to tap water until June or July 2009, when a storage tank at the Hanahan Water Treatment Plant is scheduled to be replaced.
Charleston Water System adds fluoride to treated drinking water at levels recommended by the American Dental Association and the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control to help prevent tooth decay.
The typical level of fluoride in Charleston’s tap water is 0.8 parts per million (0.2 parts per million of fluoride is naturally occurring in the water, and 0.6 parts per million is added during the treatment process). Customers who have questions about getting enough fluoride during this suspension of water fluoridation are encouraged to consult their dentist.
Charleston Water System serves the greater Charleston area, including downtown, West Ashley, Hollywood, Meggett, Ravenel, Lincolnville, James Island, Folly Beach, North Charleston, Daniel Island, Cainhoy, Hanahan, Sullivan’s Island, and Ladson. The St. Johns Water Company (including Kiawah and Seabrook Islands) and the Crowfield area of Goose Creek also use Charleston’s water. Charleston Water System also sells water to Mt. Pleasant and the Isle of Palms."

Here it comes. Let's hear from the anti-fluoridationsists! What's the reason-du-jour: "fluoride causes cancer/tremors/communism/urge to shop". For 6 months a lack of fluoride isn't going to do much harm to anyone.
Years ago Mt. P had to install an RO system to remove fluoride! We could spot the natives because their teeth had the distinctive mottled appearance of fluorosis.

I don't think wildwoodflower's post justifies a snippy reply.
Maybe we could take this opportunity to discuss the pros and cons of fluoridated water and perhaps even learn from each others perspective.

Well, for the most part, that would be a true statement. Some manufacturers, such as Tom's of Maine offer non-flouridated selections of toothpaste. And how do I know? Because my wife uses it, while snippy ole me just uses Colgate. (I think it's the neaderthal in me.)

actually my concern is not for me. it is for my children. i do not believe fluoride is safe for children. why is this board so closed minded and not up for discussions. i mean isn't the best way to make educated decisions about things to openly discuss both sides. we do not have to agree, but at least be open minded to grow and learn new things. anyway, i am holding a squirmy baby righ tnow...but later tonight after bedtime i will share some links with you about why i feel this way. in the meantime. relax. life is too short to always be defensive and ready to attack those different from you. live and let live. do the best you can for you and yours, and be tolerant of others.
oh, and no...we do not use toothpaste with fluoride...we buy natural brands w/o it for both us and the kids. we also refuse fluoride treatments at the dentist and do not give fluoride supplements. but should you choose to use it, that of course is up to you and none of my business. i just think it should not be doled out on a mass scale and families and individuals should be left to decide for themselves what they deem best.
oh, and i do drink green tea on occasion, but i do not consume it daily. nor would i let my children drink it at a young age.

Wait, what's wrong with green tea? I'm curious.
