Military Move
I'm moving to the Charleston Area sometime from March 09 to Late May 09. I'm looking at moving into the city of North Charleston, because based on google maps, it will be the midway point between the Naval base and the Main campus of TTC. So here are my questions.
Anyone here attends or attended TTC? If so, what are your thoughts about the school?
How's the nightlife for a male in his late 20's with no family?
I'm from Fort Lauderdale, so I love the beach. How are the beaches in Charleston?
Is Charleston Military friendly?
What's the average cost of rent?
(I'm looking to spend about 500-675 for a 2 Bedroom 1 1/2 bathroom)

Sure on a map North Charleston looks good, but have you done a search on other aspects of living in North Charleston? Recently, it made a not very desirable list ( North Charleston Among Nation's Most Dangerous Cities | wltx.com)
Sorry, I don't have any experience with Trident Technical College and I don't know much about the nightlife for a male in his 20's; however, downtown Charleston seems to offer a lot of night activities - bars, bands, etc.
In terms of rent - I think you may be way low. I know you are for the James Island and downtown areas. Maybe you could find something that price range in the undesirable areas of town, but I would highly recommend doing your research on the area before signing a lease. Maybe you could find a rental with a roommate for that price.
Here is a site I have used to locate rentals: Rentals - Charleston MLS.
You can also learn about crime in the area by going to: CrimeWeb.net - Home You can search by zip code. I think you have to register first before you can do a search.
Is living on base an option?
Best of luck to you.

Thanks for your reply, everything helps. Yes, I've heard about the crime rate in N. Charleston, I was really looking at moving into the Waverly Apartments or zipcode 29418 in North Charleston. I'm not too concerned with the crime rate. If it's my time, so be it. (Sounds silly, but some of the places in El Salvador makes North Charleston looks like a Fargo, ND.).
As for as I know, I wouldn't be living on base. I love the military, but living on base is a no go for me unless I'm forced to. I just like to be around everyday Americans, it relaxes me.

Look in the Otranto area, that is close to the base and the college.
Night life is pretty good here with all the schools.

I would compare North Charleston to Pompano Beach as far as the crime rate. You will be disappointed in the beaches, nothing like Fort Lauderdale beaches. They are dirty and unkempt.

That sucks, I don't care for the city of Pompano Beach especially the area around Ely High. The news about the beach in Charleston is very upsetting as well.

The beaches in the Charleston area are NOT dirty and unkept. Beachwalker at Kiawah Island, Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, and Sullivans Island are our local beaches and I can tell you that none of them are dirty, littered, or unkept - unless a party of ill-mannered people just left a mess behind them...after which someone will come along and clean it up for them.

Compared to Florida beaches, the beaches here are a letdown.

I understand what flgrammie is saying about the beaches here compared to the beaches in Florida. Every summer we vacation on the Gulf coast and love how clear the water is and how clean the beaches are. Of all the years we've vacationed there I've only seen one cig butt on the beach and it was near a trash can. When we go to IOP I see a good many cig butts and pieces of trash. I'm trying to remember if around Ft Lauderdale is where the water starts to clear because it's been 8 yrs since I've visited the area. What I mean by clear is you can see the bottom even if you are waist deep as opposed to here where you can't.
