Default Reasonable Golf Communities in Charleston Area

Hey Golfers, I would appreciate some help. My wife and I are considering retiring to the Charleston area from the Baltimore, DC area.We now live in a very comfortable golf community with a good golf course and would like to find the same in the Charleston area. We don't require to live on the course, but it would be nice.We cannot afford an $80,000 initiation fee! We are looking for $35,000 or less initiation fee. We are looking for a community near (and not necessarily on) a private or semi-private course, and a fair to good course (by reputation).Any suggestions on a community and/or golf course to explore? thanks so much for your time, frank

Almost all the golf courses in the Charleston area will have an initiation fee of substantially less than $35,000, although most are semi-private. Your decision to live in a particular golf course community, aside from from the quality of the golf course, will be the size and general price range of a home which you might consider.

So if you live in a golf course community there is still a intiation fee to be a golf course member? I thought that would be covered with HOA fee.

Stono Ferry.
Charleston Golf, Edisto Island, Kiawah: The Official Site for The Links at Stono Ferry

One of my favorite courses and I have played them all. Very low initiation fee and of course plenty of homes for sale. Initiation fee only $3000.00. My parents are members there and they love it.

There certainly could be exceptions, but as a general rule there will be an initiation fee as well as a monthly fee.

Stono Ferry is nice...lot of fun to play; good active membership.

Briarsford Creek (Johns Island) is the most exclusive (50K+) private members, very, very little play but a gorgeous course (very few people even know it exists) see golf digest...wouldn't want to live on Johns Island.

Personally, I like Coosaw Creek 9 (Semi-private) Gated community; great food in the club house; very active members; target golf. (No, I am not a member there).

Just played Pine Forest today CC (Public) Kenny Cashwell is the head professional there; hard course unless you have a single digit handicap; good community (swimming, tennis, etc)

Probably the premiere course is Bulls Bay in Mt. Pleasant, SC - private course -membership may be a little higher...but it is "THE" newest kid on the block...and has attracted/stolen most of it's members from some of the older clubs in the area.

Daniel Island has just added a 3rd nine (27 total) very upscale; more than 30k; would be worth a look.

Would suggest that you play a few of the courses first...just to make sure that they are
suited to your game.

Hope this helps!

Bobby

I second the vote for Coosaw Creek Country Club. Beautiful course, lovely homes, gated community, great golf pros, good clubhouse food. There used to be a number of social activities as well.

I don't know what the current initiation fee/monthly dues is, but I am sure a quick call (843-767-9000) to the course would answer that for you.

I can't speak to the other area courses, as I've not had a chance to play them yet.

Default I live in Coosaw Creek Country Club

Hi - I am the wife of a young Air Force officer and we currently live in Coosaw Creek. As several people mentioned to you, Coosaw has an amazing golf course and is an amazing and unique (gated) community.

We are moving (via the military) in a few months and need to sell our house. It is a one-story (with a bonus room upstairs), 2600 sf, right on a beautiful part of the golf course and pond. We custom built the house only 3 years ago and no detail was ignored - it is gorgeous.

I have realized that in this crazy housing market, I'm going to have to do some leg work to sell our house. You can find our house on www.realtor.com, the MLS number is 2833519.

Thanks and good luck!
