I do remember that Shoney's on Highway 17. They've actually torn that down, just a week or so ago, amazingly. They cut down to breakfast and lunch service, and then they closed, and now they're gone.
That was there like forty years. Citadel and Northwoods Mall have also changed for the worse. Citadel is still decent, but a lot of the stores closed. I remember when Citadel had no food court, and had great food places like Frank & Stein, Annabelle's, and even a cafeteria.

They aren't tearing down old buildings. There were very few to begin with. Remember, except for downtown all the surrounding areas were very rural or untouched. So I gather, as housing was needed they built new developments. A few neighborhoods in Mt. Pleasant and West Ashley with brick or cement ranch style homes built in the 50's or later are referred to as "historic" by people here.
However compared to the newer neighborhoods of vinyl sided particle board homes which greatly out number the brick ranchers, the 1950's homes are much older--but hardly historic like downtown is.
I checked the stats and since 1980, over 200,000 people have moved here. The county population is almost half again what it was then. The need to accommodate so many people so quickly explains the cookie cutter (and lower quality construction) neighborhoods that have sprung up everywhere.

nothing on HWY 7 between the Ultravision and Dupont Rd.,
Ashley Plaza mall being built, No Citadel Mall (Ashley Plaza Mall was it),
Ravenel was a LONG way away (and there was nothing there, still wasn't until the late 90s)
Crusing the Rivers Ave. "loop" on Friday or Saturday night wouldn't get you a ticket,
and going to Charles Towne Landing was fun.
Krispy Kreme was at the end of Magnolia Rd (I remember that, they were there until the early 2000s)

we used to stop at that krispy kreme on the way back from folly beach. i get the impression you are a little older than myself but we have definately stomped some of the same ground.do you remember big k edwards? woolworths? how about showbiz and the sundae bar and gameroom on 7? s&s cafeteria? i'm shocked that it is still there. my mom worked there before she went to the citadel to open morrisons.

That's it, Frank & Stein. I couldn't remember the name to save my life. My mom and I used to visit all the time when I was younger. I would always get a corn-dog and lemonade and that was heaven to me.
