Default Charleston County schools

Hi...

I am seeking advice from anyone that has any personal experience, or knows someone who has personal experience, with the "not so desired" Charleston County elementary schools, particularly the ones in North Charleston. As a NY teacher finishing up my masters in Literacy, I am sincerely considering moving down to the Charleston area. From what I understand, it can be rather difficult to get a teaching job in the area. This is why I am considering working in one of the "not so desired" schools in Charleston. Diversity does not bother me in the least; I was even considering teaching in NYC for a brief time period.

What I want to know is how dangerous are the schools in Charleston County.. like the worst schools.. how dangerous are they? How dangerous are the areas that they are in? Also, any other information that makes them "not so desired" would be appreciated. I would LOVE to live down in Charleston, and I am willing to do pretty much anything possible to find a job down there... but I do not want to put my life (or my sanity) at risk either.

Thanks!

I don't think you have to worry about the danger factor in elementary schools, as much as you would middle or high schools. I am in my 25th year of teaching in CCSD and have taught at both "at risk" schools as well as "excellent-rated" schools. I have friends who teach at Hunley Park, Pepperhill, and Goodwin Elementary Schools in N. Charleston and all of them love what they do and the children they teach. I agree that it will be easier to get a job teaching in N. Charleston, downtown, or Johns Island than it would on James Island or Mt. Pleasant. Those children need dedicated, caring teachers and it is a good way to get your foot in the door in Chas. County. I started out on Yonges Island and Johns Island (both rural, poverty schools) and stayed at one for 3 years and the other for 8 years...very rewarding experiences and I loved the children!

Where in NY are you from. My family is close to Middletown and we are getting set to move to Charleston soon too.

haha I'm actually from LaGrange.. which is right outside of Poughkeepsie (I'm sure you know where that is). I went to college up in Plattsburgh, though, which is where I currently reside. My friend moved down to Charleston last year and absolutely loves it, so when I finish up my Master's here, I'm HOPING to move down there to join her.

What got you interested in the Charleston area? What is your current profession?
