Mount Pleasant isn't hip. Cookie cutter suburban maybe, but definitely not hip.

I have lived here all my life, and can say Mt P used to be old Charleston, desireable. Now it is nothing but overpriced, full of transplants and traffic. Those who are there have something to prove. It is nice, but you really need to look past the plastic. It is not "Charleston" anymore....in my eyes.

The old village is still really nice & could be hip, but yeah- 90% of people are priced out of it. Ditto Ion which has been pricey form the get-go. There are still some non-plastic places such as Hobcaw but again they tend to be more family oriented & (again) pricey.
I really don't understand that quasi-urban neighborhood off Bowman (Watermark, maybe?). It looks like a new take on some other downtown but you have to drive somewhere else to do anything. And at night you stare at the parking lot lights from the Walmart.

There's hope then.
Us "transplants" might even make Mt Pleasant hip and chic. There's nothing more beautiful than a diverse, colourful, multi-cultural place with genuine, friendly people. Those are the things that make a place hip and cool (IMHO).

Nothing against Mt. P. but it brings to mind soccer moms, not surfers, underground music, vintage clothing....you know, "hip" stuff.

Yeah -- I don't see Mount Pleasant as hip. But in my definition of 'hip', Charleston just doesn't have it. BUT....that's the issue -- 'hip' means different things to different people -- even young people. Some young people find hip to mean, new, modern, cutting edge. Others may define hip as more Bohemian, more grass roots.....it's all in what you think is hip.

yes that is a few examples as how to define hip. but "hipster" has a clearer meaning i think.... more specific to a lifestyle. hard to explain. lol.

But if you throw in a mix of different people from different places you will jazz up the area with new fashion influence, music, ideas....
