Geechie, you need to go back to shoveling snow and splitting firewood.
You are blaming the current crime with 'A History of racial Oppression' 'Poverty' and 'The worst Schools in the nation'. The is a saying that goes something to the effect that if you are born poor that isn't your fault, if you choose to stay that way then it is....
My wife teaches in one of the worse areas of N. Charleston, and you know what, the kids that want to learn and have parents that value an education excel and the ones that do not have the desire or the parents backing them do nothing but start trouble.
Our welfare system keeps people relying on the government and the government doesn't play daddy/mommy very well.

The Malls here aren't so great ( not because of crime, just not many good stores) most of the stores can be found at Town Center in Mount Pleasant so I rarely go to the Mall unless I want to go to JC Penny's or Dillards. Summerville has a decent shopping area, anyway. I do like the Tanger Outlets also. The Mall just isn't the place to be anymore. Even my teenage daughter does not go to the mall. and you don't have to.
As far as the wind, it is a non issue mostly. Every area has windy days. Besides we haven't had a major Hurricane since the late 80's. How does your son even know about hurricanes in this area? Hurricanes are not often. And greatly expected so you have plenty of time to get out of here if you'd like.

There is no Macys in Charleston -- that surprised me. I thought Macys was everywhere.
I know there is no Sephora -- sigh. I'll have to make little trips to Atlanta to get my fix.
I love the J. Crew and Ann Taylor store downtown Charleston and hope they keep up the stores. THey are nice and big and have lots of variety.
Summerville definitely needs a more upscale outdoor mall.

Ignoring the usual playful banter so often seen providing colorful commentary here, I shop at both malls, depending on which one is convenient at the time. No fear. No worry.

For those not familiar with the shopping available in the town of Mt. Pleasant:
Here is a link to the stores at the Mt. Pleasant Town Center. Another outdoor shopping center has just opened ( The Market at Oakland Plantation) and the new Carolina Park development will have additional shopping.
Housing in Mt. Pleasant is more expensive than in many other areas of Charleston, but residents to have the convenience of shopping close to home rather than having to wait for future construction.

There is a correlation between poverty, racism, and crime: that's an undesputable fact.
Also, when the society as a whole disregards the welfare of a significant minority of its people- especially the young- via letting the schools go to the dogs (or, more precisely rats) well, you get what you pay for.
And you pay for what you get.
No, SC is not the only place that does this, but it has done it longer and better than any other US locale.
As for welfare being the problem, please note that the best welfare program (via poverty and crime) is the minimum wage- and since it is at record lows (it would need to be at approx. $9.00/hr for it to equal the $1.85 of the late 60's).

How is the Min wage a good thing. Min wage is for kids starting out people just starting to work, not for some brood mare who popped out three kids before she was 20. Gets skills first, if you can't feed em don't breed em.
If you raise the min wage you raise the cost of doing business for every McDs, Burger King, etc.....
This kills jobs and cost business more money.
