I have a ball cap from Detroit, it says 'come on back we missed you the first time' and has bullet holes in it.
I grew up in NJ, just outside of AC, used to drive to Pleasantville, Trenton, Camden, Philly and Newark. North Charleston doesn't hold a candle to any of those places.

Again,
SC is a perennial leader (FBI stats) in violent crime; N. Chas, Sumter and (I believe; it's definitely a SC Upcountry city) Aiken are all in the top 10 most violent.
Perception is great, but stats tell the tale.

If South Carolina and Charleston are such embarassments perhaps you should be glad to have escaped and move on.
One thing that I think should be noted about South Carolina's violence is that it is rarely random violence. Your friend, spouse, family member or 'business' associate may shoot or stab you but typically we are treated to 35 refrains of somone having seen it coming after the fact. Now there are some well-known cases opposite to that but they tend to be the exceptions that prove the rule. A significant amount of crime in the Charlseton (and Sumter) occur within a few easily defined areas.
Another issue with crime statistics is that a lot of cities get caught playing fast and loose with numbers or recategorizing to suit their PR purposes. And for the record- there are some pretty frickin tony areas to Aiken.

Yes we have, Tom.
And I'll stand by traditional modern Mathematics and Statistics.

I rarely smell the paper mill unless I am going over the bridge. The outlets usually smell fine to me. Hey is Jim and Nicks open yet?

The one across from Tanger Outlet, next to Golden Corral? Yes, that one is opened now - at least I think it was called Jim and Nicks. It smelled great the other day.....but after eating at G.C., I couldn't even THINK about another meal!

eh, I think the malls here suck big time. theres no diveristy in Charleston when it comes to shopping. Not even downtown, though I do shop Downtown sometimes, if you can afford the nicer shops then your in like flint, but its a bit pricey down there, aside of the few normal mall shops they have. just do to locations, I would shop downtown on king, or in Mount P at town center before going to any of the malls. They are by far the lamest malls I've ever been two. If you want to do some real shopping, Atlanta, Charlotte, Myrtle Beach has a nice mall, the umm.. crap, I dont remember what its called, its big, you'd think its an indoor outlet, but its not. Tanger is ok, but I dont think it has very good stores. I like guess, and you'd think at an outlet you'd find some nice stuff, but they dont even carry any of the collection lines (the good stuff) at guess. Charleston is not the place for shopping. As for crime in the malls, I work with a guy who works sercurty for Northwoods. I dont think they have had a major crimes there in a while, though I do hear funny stories every other day or so about people trying to still socks, bras, comforter sets. HAHA.. its great.

Hey, a store is a store which sells things. I'm not materialistic enough to drive to Atlanta or Charlotte to buy things. I dress nicely and have a nice home with what we have right here. Malls across the country are on their way out, they were never a good idea to begin with as far as retail success goes. They attract too many who are not there to shop and buy, if you know what I mean.

I am not materialistic either but when I choose to spend my money I have gotten use to having choices. The choices are limited in Charleston...it isn't about the mall issue. It's about stores, shops, venues for buying......
And....the more choices you have -- the better opportunities for competition and competitive pricing.
It isn't the end of the world but it is nice to variety, choice, etc.
