I'm not a fan of Gilligans at all. Out of the 3 times I've eaten there two have been bad. Plus they allow smoking and it reeks of cig smoke.

The Gilligans I go to are pretty good, but I usually get the all-you-can eat shrimp. As far as a family restaurant goes it's good. It's not Hymans or Hanks... but good.

My favorites so far are Mustard Seed and Coast for taste of food.
RB's and Water's Edge for ambience.
I have also enjoyed the Boathouse, The Wreck (pretty good, but not my fav), Poogan's Porch and SeeWee Restaurant.
I wasn't crazy about Hyman's, and I could never go back to Gilligan's or Crab Shack.

I think Bowan's Island may be a no go. They are supposedly doing Taste of Folly Saturday and the Exchange Club Oyster Roast Sunday. I think both are selling tickets at the door if you'd like to go but not sure if they are maintaining normal service.
If you really want to hit someplace nice or at least more specific to Charleston whoever mentioned Hanks and Peninsual Grill were spot on. Any of the nicer places on East Bay (SNOB, Magnolias, etc) will actually have good seafood even if thats not their entire menu. I also like McCrady's for a nice (and infrequent) night out. A couple of those fall in the special night out pricing category but each has a website you can check in advance.
Boathouse at Breech Inlet and Seewee are each worth seconding. The Boathouse for the view especially, and SeeWee just because it will take you back about 30 years in time to what the lowcountry was like before we were discoverred.
Enjoy your trip. I'll be heating up a frozen pizza in a few minutes and feeling rather let down after thinking about finer ding. <snark>

Ick, don't even remind of that place. We ate there Friday night and it was HORRIBLE and the smoke reeked to high heaven. I think my green beans were rotten. All I could think of was Kitchen Nightmares. I kept waiting for Chef Ramsey to show up. LOL We made a complaint to the manager about the smoke and she said they are talking about making all their locations non-smoking now. That is great but that doesn't help with the horrible food they turn out. Then she told us they opened a new location in downtown Charleston. I guess she thinks we will go to that one. NOT!

You mean 30 years ago everyone gave you small portions and charged you twice as much as they should for it?
Thank the Lord most other places have moved passed that. That's not the type of nostalgia I want to experience.

We will never go back. Last year I had a coupon to get a free entree with a purchase of one. We thought if we went on a Sunday before church let out it would be ok.....NOT! I told DH I couldn't do it so we turned around and I gave the coupon to a young couple. Since then I refuse to eat anywhere that allows smoking.
Lately I've been pulling up recipes online and trying them out instead of eating out. It's much cheaper and actually fun trying new things out. Plus you know how it's being cooked.

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. Some are familiar to me for sure.
With that said, which of these will be our best bet for casual. This is a VERY casual weekend for us
so we will be dressed accordingly.
Thanks again!
