I don't think anyone cares where anyone is from. People here are very accepting and friendly as long as you reciprocate.

I've encountered quite a few former Northerners living in Summerville and they all seem to really enjoy it. I used to chuckle at the Women's Club meetings at my church because the food was so varied and fantastic - more like you'd see in New York. Seems like traditional Southern foods were hard to come by because there were only one or two Southern natives in the club. I so looked forward to "refreshment time" at those meetings!

That's nice to know. I just read a couple threads and had that feeling about northerners not being accepted.

everyone's accepted here... the only thing people ask is for you to leave the area the way you found it... lol

all kidding aside there's probably more northerner's here than southerners, and if you go back enough generations most southerns came from up north... Va, Ma... Boston tea party and the likes

You'll be fine -- just do not tell a southerner what you miss from up north. And when they tell you what is wrong with up north -- give them that northern charm -- smile sweetly and just nod.

I'm a northerner. Everyone is very nice everywhere I go. I try and return the courtesy. But, I've found that while I might have been the "nicest guy" where I'm from... that equates to probably a "rude guy" down here :P

No worries! Where we live in Canebay is ALL Northerner's...I chuckle everytime someone moves in with their out of town tags still attached to the car...

We have whats called Northern hospitality on our street - we greet new folks with a bowl of pasta and some garlic bread

bigmig is on a distinguished road
As a northerner who has been here 3 years, I have figured out this whole "rude" northerner thing. Basically its all hogwash. Southerners tend to be slow and dim witted in my experience. They put a positive spin on this by referring to their lifestyle as being "laid back". Laid back is a PR term for SLOW (physically and mentally). At some point, you as a northerner will become frustrated by this (perhaps in line at the bank or grocery store, or trying to get an employee to move a little faster), and voice your displeasure. That is when you get labeled a rude northerner. It doesnt seem to affect making friends and what not, so I wouldnt let "acceptance" hold you back from moving at all . Just know that people are slow slow slow here and you will have to deal with it. It sounds great if you are on vacation but not when you are trying to get wotk done.
