What other neighborhoods should I look into? (Mount Pleasant, Ravenel: homes, tenants)

So I have posted before about Daniel Island. I graduated from CofC in 1996 and lived downtown. With my young family I am considering moving back into the area. We are interested in DI due to the fact that we can walk to the store, to get coffee, to school, etc...it seems like there is a lot to do without having to get in the car and drive. Are there any neighborhoods in the Mount Pleasant area that also offer this "walkability?" That is the one of the only things about the town that we live in now, that we don't want to lose. I have looked into I'on, but the lots just seem soooo small for the money. Is it the location of I'on that makes the prices so high? I also think that the Old Village area of Mt. Pleasant is nice, but in reality there is not much to walk to there and no sidewalks...am I correct? Thanks for any insight you may give...

Pretty much. Ion has two things going for it- walkability and the fact that all the homes are recent and built to current needs/tastes. It really is a prime spot since you are halfway between the Ravenel Bridge and 526. Also the layout is really great. Old village is further from the bridge but closer to Sullivans and the harbor. Also you pretty much pay to play in getting into attendence area for Mt Pleasant's schools.

If you wanted a similar neighborhood but could do without the commercial buildings (and it only seems like there are about 6 of those) Hibben at Bell Hall is pretty nice; however it sounds like you want walkability and more restaurants/stores/etc.

If you look beyond Mt Pleasant Byrnes Downs and Old Windemere in West Ashley (and to a lesser extent Avondale & Carolina Forrest which lack the sidewalks & are a tep behind on the upand coming ladder) are good neighborhoods but aside from Old Windemere smaller homes. The little shopping area on both sides of 17/Magnolia has restaurants/bars and a couple of banks but not many stores and Windemere offers a small library, grocery store, a nice array of stores & services as well as an elementary school in the newer part of Windemere. This is actually a good school & had a surprising number of kids booted when they cracked down on residency requirments at magnate schools. Not sure what will become of the shopping center adjacent to Byrnes Downs when they finish contruction but I imagine it will only improve once Harris Teeter opens and they get tenants back into half the spaces.

I actually think Folly Beach is pretty walkable but am not sure that is your cup of tea and retail beyond the surf shop is non-existent. Ditto Sullivans but that set of costs is a whole diferent ball game.

Park West and Dunes West in Mt Pleasant have shopping, restaurants and schools in the neighborhood. There is also a path a that goes throught the neighborhood. From some sections it may be a long walk.
