Moving from Wisconsin to Summerville or Mount Pleasant! Help us decide!
My fiance and I both decided to get out of this DRAMA filled state lol...and live close to the beach! We've been researching South Carolina for months now. And i think we broke it down to either Summerville and Mount Pleasant! Now im 26 and shes 25, we both like to go out to a nice restaurant and maybe for a few drinks. And she loooves to shop so there has to be a mall nearby haha...We both love the outdoors and def the water so a nice beach nearby is vital....Ive been looking at places for rent and everything seems reasonable. Were willing to spend like $700-$800 a month for a 2bedroom apt or duplex...but were soo stuck on which to move to. I guess the best way to decide is to visit both cities and see which we would prefer. But please give me ur guys's input on the 2 cities.
Oh ya...i work in the cell phone industry so what carriers are over there? I work for US CELLULAR and i see S carolina doesnt have that carrier. Is there alot cell phone carrier jobs at either city??? And shes in the Retail sales as well...Help would be appreciated thanks for your time

MtP. may be outside of your price range, check with a realtor.
Verison, Sprint, TMobile, AT&T are a few cell phone companies.

Even though your post is two months old, I hope I can still change your mind about moving to either Summerville or Mt Pleasant. If you have already visited there, I'm sure you immediately noticed the horrendous traffic. Judging from what your occupations are, your income is not nearly sufficient enough for lower SC, MOST especially Mt Pleasant. Unemployment in SC has shot up and is now one of the highest in the US. Also, don't believe the hype about how great the schools are there. They are actually 2 to 3 years behind the rest of the US as told to me by people who moved to SC from other states. Real-estate in Mt Pleasant has tanked. The Port of Charleston just lost its largest customer. Crime has shot up....., I could go on and on. I recently moved from Mt Pleasant to Syracuse, NY - best decision I ever made. When I moved out of Mt Pleasant to Syracuse, hordes of others were moving out of Mt Pleasant as well, mainly because they have lost their shirts in real-estate there. I encourage you both to look up the Syracuse, NY posts here on City-Data, and to also visit www.wciv.com to get the real scoop on how things really are in lower SC. I can guarantee you will find plenty of drama there and then some. Every time I read WCIV's web site, I am reminded why I moved out of Mt Pleasant and SC.

Haha, bitter much? The original poster was looking to live close to the beach and be outdoors. Syracuse hardly qualifies. If he was looking to move to a dead post-industrial, dreary, cold city, I can highly recommend Syracuse. If he is looking for snow from September to May, I definitely recommend Syracuse. If you want to live near one of the most pollulated lakes in the country, go ahead and move to Syracuse. Syracuse is so great that people are moving out of town (-5% population change) to spread its greatness.
On the positive side, there are some nice suburbs (Manlius) and good public schools. It has a nice farmer's market. Housing is cheap. Wegman is great. Lots of pretty countryside outside ugly downtown. You are close to the mountains and wineries which is nice during the short summers.
The worse years of my life were spent in Syracuse.... but different strokes for different folks.
To the original poster, Mt Pleasant is nothing like Syracuse... thank God.

To guttata
Thanks for reading my post! I'll give you some updates on Syracuse. Onondaga Lake has undergone a major cleanup. You can't swim in it or eat fish from it yet, but it's very close. The downtown area has a couple of new buildings going up, and some other new investments, despite the present economy. The Carousel Center Mall is adding a huge new addition and is destined to become the Mall of America of the eastern US. The weather here is perfect for my allergies!

I am going to exclude economics here and talk just about the town MP vs Summerville. There is no comparison between Summerville and MP. Mount Pleasant is one of the nicest towns you'll ever live in. Great beaches, great social scene, 15 min from Charleston, awesome weather all year around, fine food, a progressive town in what many consider a backward state. I moved from Boston to MP 5 years ago and it is the best decision I ever made. Syracuse NY, who the hell wants to live in the snow belt and to top it without access to the ocean. Please, if it is because of a job fine, but as far as life style, it is like comparing raw liver to fillet and lobster. MP rules !

Yes, I've been forced to accept my fate (my wife lived there) and moved to Mt P several years ago. I've come to like certain aspects of it. It's nice to be 10 minutes from the beach. It's easy to get most places we need to go. I park at Target and ride my bike over the Connector through both Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island. That is hard to beat. Traffic gets a bit backed up in the afternoon, but you'll find that all over the area. That's a by-product of folks like yourself moving here.
I'll step off the box now and let Tom tell you why Summerville should be your obvious choice...

So for 700-800 a month I don't know where you could 'safely' live at in MT.P. You are gonna need to shop around in Summerville.
