Ohioaninsc, you are very close. Hawken. First and Third grade. And I was a 1989 grad with cousins closer to your age at U.S. Have you been here long? Any education insights or living areas you can recommend - since you are from the same general areas? Compare neighborhoods and areas around Charleston to Chagrin Falls, Shaker, Rocky River, University Hts/Cleveland hts, Pepper Pike?

I actually live in Rock Hill, SC just south of Charlotte...but I have grandparents that live in Mt P (they used to live on Kiawah Island, but hav since moved into a Senior's Living area called Franke at Seaside (they own a patio home there, but have assisted care if needed).
Anyway, I grew up in Pepper Pike, and my mom and step dad still live there.
I am single, so I don't have kids, and don't pay too much attn to the schools here yet, though from what I understand, in my area, Fort Mill schools rank highly, at least equivalent to Mt P schools or Dorchester II. Most everything is new in Mt P, so nothing really matches anything around Shaker Hts or Pepper Pike or Beachwood (the 3 areas I'm most familiar with in the East Cleve burbs). The Old Village is my favorite are of Mt Pleasant...it's off of Coleman Blvd & near the Shem Creek area. If you don't need a big yard, and are interested in a or New Urbanism type of neighborhood, and you can afford it, Ion is a great neighborhood.
Unlike running through Shaker Hts along Shaker Blvd, there is no light rail down in Charleston or Mt P...I always road that rapid to get to DT Cleveland to go to ball games or whatever other reason I was going down there.

OhioPilot - let me get the information from my cousin & get back to you with the exact information. They live in Ravenel & transport their children to a different elementary school based on this law.

It's the "No child left behind act".
No Child Left Behind requires all public schools administer a state-wide standardized test annually to all students. Schools which receive Title I funding must make Adequate Yearly Progress in test scores (e.g. each year, its fifth graders must do better on standardized tests than the previous years).
If a Title I school fails to make Adequate Yearly Progress, it is put on a list of "failing schools" published in the local paper and parents are given the option to transfer to another school. Its Title I is cut and it must provide special tutoring for its students.

Was talking to a friend earlier and found out Buist (the downtown magnate school) is holding its lottery this week. Apparently they will be teaching Mandarin next year. So there is the one place I know of that is teaching it. However- i have alawys been under the impression that Buist was fairly regimented and warned my friend as much. (They seem to be more interested in it being prestigious but not costing $10g a year.)
Did the new charter/magnate school on upper King get approved? They might be worth looking into. Otherwise I think the suggestions about Ashley River Creative Arts and School for the Performing Arts would be good bets. Both are magnates though so you can't simply move to a district and be set.

Ashley River Creative Arts magnet (public) is a wonderful and nationally recognized school for its arts programs. Students take 80 minutes each day for classes such as drama, spanish, art, music and computer. Suziki strings are also offered as well as ballet, tap and jazz. We have the jazz troup which performs locally, and the Drama Troup that just had the honor of performing an adaptation of The Three Little Pigs in Spanish at the Kennedy Center.Construction has already started on their brand new building with room designed especially for the arts (dance studio, drama theatre, dark room for photography). Its a great public school!
