I was looking at the sex offender registry for Mount Pleasant last week...I only did a sampling because I was short on time, but did not find many of the "child molester" variety & no predators (yet), which does make a difference to me. I've worked in law enforcement and know that "sex offender" can cover a lot of ground.

Yes, you are correct, at least according to the SC sex offender database. Seems there are some discrepancies in the SC sex offender registry and the familywatchdog.us site. I recently found the familywatchdog.us site from the parenting forum in city-data and liked the visual representation it provided. I didn't use the SC sex offender registry to get the figures last night because the other site provides a summary and I didn't have time to count each line of offenders via zip code.
Either way, my point was that there are a lot of sex offenders in this area. Looking at the City Data topic about this issue http://www.city-data.com/forum/paren...live-your.html, it seems like there is a high concentration in our area when compared with the reported offenders in other areas of the country.
Sure, the term 'sex offender' encompasses a variety of people, but either way - at first blush, it seems that areas in SC provide a safe haven for law breakers. Maybe if citizens were moved to action and adequate punishment was provided, this wouldn't be the case.

i was looking too, and found fewer violent offenders then i thought i would (on james island), and even fewer people convicted of offfences with young children (and not teenagers over 13). i agree "sex offender" can cover many kinds of offences, some more dangerous then others. there criminals everywhere, but i am thankful to have access to this info online. i think it is important for parents to be aware of.
i am not sure there is a greater concentration of sex offenders here. if you check other larger cities or more populated areas, it seems similar. i moved from a small town up north, and even had offenders living there. it is everywhere. scary stuff, but it helps to be aware.

Oh well Wildflower...Vermont is a country club for pedophiles ...the judges wear berkenstocks and don't believe in punitive justice...I believe in "pen-a-tive" justice, if you know what I mean.

I have a question about the SLED registry. How can someone have a conviction listed as "Child Molestation" or "Sexual Exploitation of a Minor" and yet have the Sexual Predator box marked "No"? I would classify those action as that of a predator.

That is a great question and doesn't make sense why they would not be categorized as sexual predators. I tried to find out what constitutes a sexual predator in South Carolina, but so far no luck.

I believe it has to do with the degree of the crime & the psychological profile of the offender... A 32 year old creep that has sex with a teen is not a predator. I worked in a prison and there were a ton of child molesters...in the visiting room they could visit and even play games with children (often their "new girlfriend's" kids)...as long as it wasn't their victim. We had only one "predator" that wasn't allowed to have minors at his table and I guess it was because he was deemed a constant threat to children...I say if you have anything sexual to do with a person under 13...you're a predator.

I think 14, 15, and even 16 and 17 year old children should still be protected.

I agree that all minors should be protected but if you classify statutory rape of a 16 year old the same as raping a two year old it can become problematic.
