Default How's Hanahan for a good family area?

I'm looking to relocate to SC (from WI - no more 8mos of winter for this girl!!) My daughter's father (my x-husband) lives in Johns Island. I was looking and researching the Summerville area but then thought it might be nicer to be closer to the X and noticed Hanahan isn't as far as Summerville. Can anyone give me the scoop? I'm from a small town in WI, mainly grew up in the South; TX, CA, LA, etc so I'm not afraid of change or the warmer climate. I am however, concerned for my children and want them to feel comfortable, as in "small town" feel. When I say small, the town and surrounding 'burbs total about
50 thousand and rapidly growing-expanding. So my primary concerns are: excellent schools, good safe neighborhoods, affordable housing ($120K-$140K home range, that's an estimate as I haven't yet researched utility/insurance costs) and relatively quick access to the BEACH!!! My children are 8 and 16 and I am a single mother so I don't want to spend 3hrs a day in traffic. I appreciate any advice.
