Default Safe neighborhoods on the Peninsula

Hello, my fiancee and I are relocating to Charleston, SC and want to live downtown. Most of the places we have found that are in our price range and have the amenities we want are just north of 17 (Hampton Park area) or just south of 17 on the eastern edge of the peninsula by the Cigar Factory. I will be working late nights and I want to make sure my fiancee is safe.

My question is: Are these safe areas???

Thank you in advance for all of your answers and advice.

I've lived in Wagener Terrace for 5 years now and have sold clients in Hampton Park as well. Both are terrific neighborhoods to live in, and I'd recommend them highly. Safety goes hand-in-hand with common sense and responsibility no matter where you live, though. Take appropriate precautions in any neighborhood and you'll be fine.

Drive by day and night before you buy/rent. You can only decide what feels safe for yourself and your fiancee. I would also call the local police department and get crime stats. Good Luck!

Hampton Park and Wagner Terrace are fine. I've had friends live there as well as Sans Souci (sp) and North Centrel (near Mt Pleasant street.) None had any issues with vioent crime but there was a car break in for one. But that has also happened to friends at Folly, Mt P and South of Broad.

The East side is still a little sketchy- proceed with caution there.
