Thank you for stating a fact that's of necessity overlooked by those trying to sanitize the past.

We must never allow ourselves to live in a fantasy world just because we don't like what happened.

It demeans everyone- including those who fought under the Stars & Bars.

We are also in the 21st century and we need to move forward or be mired in the past. We have an African American President which even 20 years ago was an impossibility. America slowly is changing and I would rather move to the future and let the past take care of itself.

I don't live in a fantasy world. I have seen the reality of things. My moms' family had their house set fire by the KKK when they were all asleep and their crime was that her parents were from Italy. Luckily they all got out in time but their dog had been poisoned by the clan so he wouldn't bark and warn them. She never forgot it.

And no one is sanitizing the past. I know how bad it can be. I grew up in the 1960s and saw the stuff going on. But there comes a time when you either move forward and let the past go or you stay mired in it forever. I would rather move forward and make this country into a place where everyone is welcome. Racism from any race is wrong.

I agree with RI, my only issue is the moving forward has to come from both sides.

Thank You! I couldn't have said it any better myself! Mutual respect of one another's race and culture have to take place before the healing can be complete.

I don't think you'll find anybody who argues with that; it's a lot like saying you're in favor of world peace. And I agree there's plenty of room for progress on all sides.

At the same time, I cannot ever recall passing an African-American home and seeing a banner flying that is almost universally recognized as a symbol of racial oppression. Nor do I ever recall a banner flying on state grounds that the majority of Causcasions would consider offensive. The racial tensions associated with the Confederate flag did not start out on a level playing field, so there's nothing wrong with one side of the debate taking extra steps forward to resolve it.

As I said in a previous post, I'm a SC native and the flag is part of my history. I'm also white, though that really doesn't matter. I just think it's time the flag moved on to museums and history books. Until that happens, we're really not ready for healing to begin. Just one old fart's opinion....

i am a black southerner and nothing at all wrong with the confederate flag, esp after years of living up north and seeing that racism isnt a southern issue, the yankees are just as racist.

and having grown up in SC and other states in the south, i know blacks as well as whites who have rebel flags plates and stickers on their trucks, on their tee shirts and ball caps, and flying in their yard, you have to travel to find them but they are there

My two cents. I'm a senior at USC, who's Nigerian American, and i've lived here in SC for TWELVE years. Sure, SC is pretty rural in most respects but ya know what? that's the state I live in and there's not much to be done about it. I see the Confederate flag often when driving passed the statehouse but like, idk. it doesn't offend me really. granted, i was not born and raised here when all that crap was going on but really, i do think that people on both sides of the issue should not put so much value into a flag representative of a past that neither side wants to remember much.

it's not like its the US flag, where it unites us all, it's the Confederate flag. The flag of a failed attempt at leaving the Union and making its own country based on old institutions such as slavery (it was a major factor, but it was not the only factor in the Civil War. Read a history book.)

It is a huge part of SC history. I think it should be in a museum or something. Let people who have it carry it proudly if they want to. I personally am not offended by symbols or words, but the reasons behind showing or saying them. (Just like the swatsika symbol wasn't a Nazi original designs. It was inspired by other symbols and then made into what it is) Just know that like the Swatsika, the confederate flag represents a history for some people where they were hung, and shot, and forced to work for nothing, etc. And those same people just stopped receiving such treatment about 40 years ago. Minorities aren't making a big hoohah over nothing.

Just my two cents of course. That said, I think SC is pretty nice. Great weather, really down to earth, kind people.

....and I have black teacher friends who feel the same as you do. We openly discuss racial issues and all agree that there will always be some from all races who will never accept others no matter what happens...and that the flag has nothing to do with deeply-ingrained feelings. I'm glad that they moved the Confederate flag and think that only our national and state flags should be flying at the state capitol....but don't get bent out of shape over the issue. I think the bigger the issue is made, the more it stirs up old hatreds.....let sleeping dogs lie.

Results. Although racial attitudes are important among both southerners and nonsoutherners, region and race also influence support for the Confederate flag. Southern whites have the greatest support for the flag followed by nonsouthern whites, nonsouthern blacks, and southern blacks.

Conclusions. Support for the Confederate flag is not simply about racial attitudes, but a more complex phenomenon where region and race exert important influences.

In the "heritage" frame, the researchers highlighted the argument that supporters of the Confederate battle flag were only motivated by affection for southern history. In the "black opposition" frame, they emphasized the open hostility most blacks feel for the battle flag. And in the "racist hate-groups frame," they stressed the long-standing link between the Confederate flag and groups such as the Ku Klux Klan
