I agree with Tom about searching for rentals thru Island Realty. We use them a lot if we can't find something on VRBO.com

The problem with beach vacations we've found over the last decade was that you had to book them so far in advance.. few *choice* last minute rentals. However, this year might be a bit better. I've received post card after post card from Island Realty offering 20% discounts. However, be warned.. the tourist taxes and gratuities on most of these rentals run about that much. That was a shocker! The other areas we rent in don't have such.. the price is the price. Also, they charge additional pet fees which can run up your bill.

I will add my opinions on the Charleston beaches.. Folly and Sullivans are "old timey" to me (I still have gas left in MY tank too). I like the aura of Wild Dunes, esp the glitz of the Pavillion area, and because of the beautiful landscaping and huge old oaks.. but many of their rental places are dated and you have to walk aways to the beach unless you get an oceanfront condo. It can be hit or miss there. The best places are the huge oceanfront houses that are mostly for big family reunions and can run around $10K in high season.

However, that said, I have to say I loved the beach area at Sullivan's Island near the lighthouse. And the pier at Folly is nice. And the little town section of IOP is a FUN touristy area.

Did I just totally confuse you??

No no not at all. What is your favorite beach out of all of those? What do you mean by old timey? I thought folly was a younger crowd.

Tom thanks for the website. I will check it out.

IOP and Folly are by far the most crowded beaches in the area...Sullivans can get a crowd on it, but not nearly as much as the other two....the only way IOP is worth it is if you can get mid island or toward the southern part of it and find parking on the side streets...there are many public access points then, and those areas aren't as bad as the Wild Dunes area or the area by the park and little tourist area...as a youngster, you'd like Folly but it may be too crowded for your folks...also, IOP is the only beach w/ a bar right on it (The Windjammer)...you can walk off the beach w/ nothing but yoru bathing suit on, and buy a beer and get food. That is a cool thing for young adults....plus every Sun they have their Budweiser Bikini Bash

Calling Folly old timey doesn't mean that it doesn't have a younger crowd...the buildings there though are older and a bit smaller compared to IOP...it looks a bit more rundown, but not in a bad way...it's hard to explain it w/out seeing it.
