My husband was a disabled vet from the Vietnam era with a college degree. Afterwards he spent 30+ yrs as a mfg engineer up until 2 yrs ago when at age 60 the Bosch plant he worked at for the last 15 yrs closed. He ended up totally disabled in 2007 after having a stoke from the stress of trying to find employment at his age. We live off 2K/mo and savings in NC thanks to Bosch.

Sad as you think your story is, there's always someone a lot worse off than you are. That's the way I look at it.. and it has nothing to do with race whatsoever.

Thanks!
I also have a degree, but am unable to work due to my disability. No one said I thought my story was sad. I spoke the truth about MY situation. Your right, race should play no part in it. That's the point! If you were a martian I would say the same thing......stop bitching and blaming the past. Soon YOU become the past!!!

Your wife may be able to find a job right off of the bat or she may be looking for a while.

Last time I checked there were over 1K listings on Careerbuilder within 50 miles of Summerville.

I disagree about faulting the govenor, I don't believe we should be using any of that money like we are but that is just my opinion and has nothing to do with the OP's question.

I agree!

Too bad your state is turning into a bunch of pansies!

Hey, I think you are perfectly entitled to your opinion and yes, you are very welcome to move here. No, SC is not made up of all liberals....we are actually a pretty diverse state. I have an equal number of liberal and conservative friends and like to think of myself as an American.
I do agree with you on many of the points you make, not all, but many....and you are certainly entitled to state your opinions PC or not.

As far as a place to live for your family....true, the closer to the coast you are, the more expensive the housing is. I would suggest Columbia and vacinity ..... In this area, Hanahan, Goose Creek, and further out aren't terribly expensive and have some good schools. Good luck in your search.

And, I want to thank you for your service to our country!

Give up on that "entitled" thing, though.

Best advice I can give you.

You are very welcome!! That's what this country is all about, different opinions; but still we are all AMERICAN!! I feel sometimes as if all of the sacrifice soldiers make is in vain. We have socialist trying to take over and its hard to watch. Pawleyguy: Until you lose a limb, an eye, and your mental health, you shouldn't tell anyone where to live! What have YOU done for YOUR country to complain about it. I earned the right to complain for every soldier who has not come back Everything America stands for is being taken away: like a frog in a pot. slowly boiling, till he's dead States like SC need to stand up and say NO we won't take it anymore! Do you really think your state's answer is socialism I hate to see this, it breaks my heart

Polo, don't get discouraged. There are many helpful and reasonable people on this site. You just have to take it all in and take away from it what is helpful to you. If you read posts long enough you start to see the same posters consistently posting what most likely represent extreme positions. I don't get a sense that most people who live in SC are unfriendly etc. I'm leaving tomorrow to travel to Charleston for a visit and to scout homes and places of employment. I gladly post my impressions and any information that I think may be helpful to others who may be considering relocating to Charleston. Hope this helps you in some way.!!!

sumter native is on a distinguished road
NC is a much nicer place to live, Soon As I can Im heading up towards Travlers Rest or Oconee,' Much Nicer people there and for sure better scenery, and here near Sumter ya get to listen to f-16 screaming around all day long , LOL
I aint knockin the military none I was Army, Helicopters are MUCH MUCH more quiet lol
As for jobs here well lets see Federal Mogul announced they will be closing their doors near Summerton,( last I read was over 800 jobs)
A steel company that was breaking ground here said nope and stopped building the plant,(we had the Iron contract on that job).
Caterpillar has 2 plants here one pin plant and one hydraulics plant, they bith shut down for one week a month now and there is talk that they will be closing there doors sooner or later,I think thtas another 500 jobs, Unemployment in sumter county is hovering around 15 percent and seems to be rising,This figure does not include construction workers or anyone that gets a 1099 at the end of the year as they ant file for unemployment..
I am making it on sometimes as little as 1100 a month or less due to the work just plain not being there...
Racism yeah we got it but from my experience it was more blacks not liking whites,I went to Rafting creek,LMAO
As for education if your child is that much ahead of the others in the class you`ll have a hard time getting them into some kind of advanced classes, (tried that with my daughter)
Private schools would be much better, but on a limited income it may not be possible in your situation, If ya move near columbia the schools are for sure better than here in sumter,Richland county 1 seems to get much more funding than the schools around here,The school my son goes to was built in the 40`s and lastyear the school board decided to do some construction on it but nothing has happened other than they closed down the parking lot for constructon and I havent seen any progress as yet(funding problems?)
Hmm them mountains sure sund nice lol
