Hello all. I will be moving to Charleston or Wilmington N.C. and looking for some objective opinions from posters on both cities. What are some of the pros and cons to either city. I've done alot of research on both and I know Chas. is bigger and has more to offer with all its rich tradition and beauty but more expensive. Wilm. seems very quaint with its own variety of activities to do along with its tradition and beauty. Plus, I think it's cheaper as well. I'm a single male in my early 30's with no children. I'm very social and active( fishing, kayaking, etc. ). I enjoy being around diversity. A Job won't be a problem and will be renting for a yr. I haved lived in South Carolina before but do not know much about Chas. and need 1st hand kwoledge b/c I want to make a good decision on both cities. Also, where to live concerning affordabilty, activities outdoors and socializing. Any info will be much appreciated. Thanks.
I have lived in both. Wilmington for 11 years and the Charleston area for 6. At first, I longed to return to Wilmington, but the more I keep up with the news there and the things going on, I have lost my desire to go back. The crime there has gone through the roof for such a small town. There are gang problems downtown. Traffic has gotten worse and it was bad when I lived there. There are serious traffic accidents everyday. The beach is nearly impossible to go to because of overcrowding and lack of parking. You are right though, compared to the coastal areas of Charleston, Wilmington is less expensive, or at least it was. Real estate skyrocketed there after we moved and now Wilmington is known to be one of the most expensive areas in NC to live. Then there is the hurricane issue. Went through 6 of them there. Wilmington kinda sticks out from the coast, making it more vulnerable when the hurricanes start to make their curve. Wilmington was a nice quiet town when we moved there in 92, but it has grown and changed a lot. Wilmington has had a lot of problems with sewage spills polluting the waterways. I really think the Charleston area has a lot more to offer as far as activities and socializing. The downtown area in Wilmington has nothing on Charlestons, and I think there is a better class of people here. The downtown Wilmington night crowd seems to attract a lot of troublemakers.
