I need a mall....
Hi, I know this seems a little materialistic in this economy...BUT I wanted to get an idea if a nice MALL is needed in the Greater Charleston area. It seems that a lot of people that move here from other area miss their malls....their CPK's, Nordstroms, Macy's, etc.
I know there is the Citadel Mall and the outdoor mall in Mt. P and the Northwoods Mall and the Tanger Outlets...but the closet REAL Mall is in Charlotte, NC....SouthPark MAll. I know there are nice stores downtown...but they all close at 6pm and when it is hot don't you want to shop inside?
Maybe in time I will no longer miss a Mall (I hope)
But my Husband is looking for a development project....and I told him to go develop mall...a nice mall.
So...do you think a mall that would cover the greater Charleston Area (Summerville, W. Ashely, Charleston, Mt. P) is a good idea.
Just trying to get a feel if there is a need or not in the area

In general, not just in this area, it seems most traditional malls are declining in favor of shopping centers like Towne Centre in Mount Pleasant. What goes in those shopping centers depends on the local market, I suppose.

There is no "if" about it. Charleston has been in need of a nice mall for years. I'm from NJ and a little while after I moved here my mom came down to visit. She wanted to go to the mall so I took her to Northwoods. We walked around the entire mall in maybe 15 minutes and when we were through all she could was "Is that it?" Most malls in NJ you can't even walk through one section of a floor in 15 minutes let alone the entire building.

I found a nice traditional mall in North Charleston. Its the kind that used to be around in the 80s
Its off of Rivers Ave. If you get off 26 onto ashley phosphate hang a right. Then turn left onto rivers ave. and it is about a mile down on the left. It even has the real smell of a good old mall... when you go in you will know what I mean. Its the first thing I noticed.

For me, I'm so happy there's not the "traditional" sea of shops on-top-of-each-other mall in Charleston! A walk around the Mt.P Towne Center is great when you need a national store, even in the heat. And there are so many nice small shops downtown that are privately owned and operated - we should support those people!

Charleston has been in a need for a nice mall forever. Citadel Mall and Northwoods Mall are very boring, as they don't have any competition. They do all of their ads together, have many of the same stores, and have the same interiors, just about, with the same entrances they had in the 80s.
Charles Towne Square could have been redeveloped, but that area, with the Naval Base closing, was going downhill quickly.
We don't even have Macy's, while every market around us has one. Instead, we're stuck with boring Dillard's, with their 70's music and boring ads in the newspaper.

Everyone doesn't desire to drive all the way out to Mount Pleasant or downtown and having to deal with parking issues.
I think there should be a mall in Mt P not just for those residents but for the folks as far away as Mclellanville and the rest of Highway 17. Northwoods and Citadel are good for Charleston county folks and we need a mall up here in Dorchester County badly.

Yes, we are in desperate need of a decent mall. I had the displeasure of going to the Citadel Mall tonight only because I had to pick up something for a wedding. I never go to any of the malls here because they are so terrible. Besides the anchor stores, Citadel has nothing in it unless you are 20 and under and want to dress like a rapper. There were a lot of empty spaces. It was pretty bad. I agree with Nauticadon, Dorchester County is the area that needs a mall the most. There was an article in the paper last year about building a town center type place on Hwy 78 near CSU. I don't know with the economy if those plans have fell through though.

Dorchester County would be a great place for a mall. And I would LOVE to see someone develop a shopping mall like Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach. Something with a theme...something FUN for the whole family!
