Interracial couples on James Island
My husband and I moved to James Island in 2007 and are having difficulty finding other interracial couples on James Island. I am white and my husband is black. We moved from California and are quite surprised at the segregation of whites and blacks in Charleston. I find it sad that we are given the "evil eye" when we go out to restaurants. Has anyone else experienced this?

It all depends on the area you are in. I think the newer areas, close in West Ashley and the northern part of downtown tend to be the most open. Goose Creek, specifically, seems to be the most open to various racial combos.
A couple of my friends who have dated/married accross race have actual felt equal rath from both communities but especially if it is a successful black man marrying a white woman. If you make friends with people in more transient fields such as MUSC, CoC and the Navy or Air Force it is pretty much a non-issue. One couple pretty much escaped this by moving to a very nice part of downtown (but not South of Broad) where the $/social quotient basically overrides racial attitudes. Not everyone is fortunate enought to buy their way out of the problem or have suitable job titles to insure snob appeal.

Thank you for your advise. It is true about the rath from both communities. Any suggestions on Christian churches where interracial couples could attend? My husband and I would love to find a church that we are comfortable in. We have only experienced mostly all black or all white churches. I know Charleston is more open than this.

You would hope any faith based Church would welcome you and respect you and your husband.

I attend St. Stephens Episcopal Church on Anson St. in downtown Charleston. This is a very accepting community with a rich history of diversity. The congregation is racially inclusive with several interracial couples as part of our church family. We celebrate our diversity and demostrate our love for one another as we walk in the door. We would love to have you check us out and experience a truly loving and accepting congregation as Jesus intended.

In most areas I've been there seem to be very accepting people. Of course you'll always find some folks who look at you funny and those who won't speak. I just figure it's their loss.

Get used to it, my girlfriend and I get it all the time. I just chalk it up to ignorance and stupidity. You will see from some of the posts on here just how uppity some of the locals are. Trust me, only God can help them at this point. LOL
As far as church goes, I could recommend a good one. I will DM you the info as I dont want this to turn into a church war.

yes ,sadly you might have to get used to it, racism still exists there as in many places-esp more rural places or places with lower education status. i can recommend you guy hang out more in Mt Pleasant, its my hometown and not so intolerant. Also a great church in james island is Victory Baptist Church, wonderful people.
