West Ashley isn't actually a separate city - it is the area of Charleston that is west of the Ashley river. Your best bet for good info on the crime stats is to call the police department and give them the address(es) that you are looking at - they will be able to tell you what the crime in that particular area is like.

We live in West Ashley. We compared Mount Pleasant and West Ashley and chose West Ashley. We got a gorgeous brand new house that was almost $100,000 less than the same house in Mt. Pleasant. I've heard lots of stuff on the schools but my daughter loves West Ashley high school and she plays soccer and loves the coach.

I have the same question. I was wondering specifically about the Ashley River Road area beginning with where Marsh Cove (where all the streets are named after horse breeds) is down to and across from Pierpont (or Pierpoint) around Dogwood Road.
I'm a little concerned because on one of the crimewatcher websites it lists these areas as being poor and even very poor for Crime Safety. Are there lots of robberies around that area? I did check the sex offender website and of those that registered I wrote down 19 streets including Shadowmoss Pkwy that have a sex offender living on them. Now I'm going to check to see how close or far away these streets are from the places I'm thinking about.
The same website lists Johns Island as being even safer than Mount Pleasant so now this website has me rethinking where I ought to look. Also the website does not rank James Island very highly as far as safety is concerned and gives bad scores to Riverland Terrace and Woodland Shores Road area including the condos near the Crab House restaurant. Another website I checked not that long ago gave all of James Island only a slightly lower score than Mount Pleasant. I wonder what the real story is? I know the Westchester section of James Island is really bad but other than that, has James Island gotten worse? Also if the economy gets worse, which areas do you think will be the least safe?
Right now is it less safe to walk outside at night , such as on the walking paths at Shadowmoss Plantation or in West Ashley Park or over on the east side of Ashley River Road, than it would be over in the Harborview Road Stiles Point area?
I'd like to hear from those of you who know those areas if you have a moment (please and thanks in advance).

There is this one also for sex offenders in South Carolina. It shows mug shots AND gives addresses IF they bothered to register.

The neighborhood scout site (first link) does a bizare job of grouping areas in to portions of towns or neighborhoods. Especially on James Island. I wonder if their odd boundaries aren't spiking or decreasing numbers for what most of us would consider the area named as opposed to how its grouped on that map. Do they count people per capita? That might explain why Sam Rittenberg seemed to creep ahead of South Windemere (west ashley) or Hobcaw (Mt Pleasant) which I would consider very safe communities.
Keep in mind that in the entire Charleston area the 'good' and 'bad' neighborhoods are often separated by all of two blocks.
The SC criminal registry is always good for a scare.

I agree with Mr. Peatie. Good neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods are close together regardless of where you live in Charleston. If you live in the newer private neighborhoods of West Ashley (Hunt Club, Grand Oaks etc) you will love it and you will be fine. We go outside at night all the time, there are cookouts, people jogging etc. No worries here.
