Default NJ to Charleston in July

I have a dear friend travelling by car with 5 young children () from NJ to Charleston, in July. I've never been to Charleston. She asked me for stopping points on that route.

So, anyone travel that route before? If so, what is the best/most direct route they should take? About how long is it?

Where do you suggest they plan stops?

And, any suggestions on what to do in Charleston? I think she'll get some alone time with husband too - so, adult only activities and family activities.

Thank you!

I-95 to I-26 is the most direct route. Depends on how many stops they want to make, but I'd try for something close to the VA-NC border if I wanted to make it a two day trip. Emporia, VA is right on the line, where Hwy 58 meets I-95. Plenty of choices for food and lodging there. Charleston is about 6 more hours from Emporia.

I moved here from NJ about 20 years ago, I go back every now and then to visit, during the summer...

I-95 is the most direct way down, but you have to deal with Baltimore, DC and Richmond traffic. It is about a ten hour trip from S. Jersey (Egg Harbor City) to Summerville.

I have done it straight through, only stopping for gas and potty breaks, which will be many with 5 children....

Any questions let me know...
