Default Mount Pleasant or Daniel Island

I'm looking to move my family from PA to Mount Pleasant or Daniel Island. Our home budget is no more then 700K, and wanted to ask advice on which communities people would recommend. I have a 1 and 5 yr old, so schools are extremly important, and a community with young families.

You'll get lots of opinions on either location.

I think Daniel's Island is a nice community. It has a nice feel to it when you drive around and a real family place.

Mount Pleasant has a variety of community styles to choose from. I like the idea of being closer to the beach. I'm not crazy about having to get on 526 every time I want to go someplace. One accident and you are stuck. At least in Mount Pleasant there are options. Not a huge deal but just one of the reasons we chose Mount Pleasant. Shopping is a little more convenient in Mount Pleasant.

My advice to anybody -- get in a car and drive around -- and drive around and drive around. Take your time to really get a feel for the area.

Either area you would fit in nicely. I personally have younger children (and older) and I live in Mt Pleasant. I love the proximity to the beach and downtown and most everything you need is right here. The schools are excellent as well. But DI is very nice good schools K-8 and nice homes. You'll have to leave the area to do your shopping but it isn't too far from anything. I'd have your Realtor send you listings in both areas that fit your criteria. I often show both areas to clients and they make a choice once they see both. Just plan for a good 3 day visit if your buying this trip. One for each area and one to go back to the homes you like best. Good Luck!

We live on DI and love it. Great place to raise kids because there are lots of young families (with lots of kids) around. But, I can see the appeal of Mt Pleasant - closer to shopping/beaches. With your price range, you should be able to get into I'On in Mt. Pleasant. It has some similarities to DI - smaller lots with homes closer together, shared community space/parks/trails.

Very good, newer, K-8 school on DI. Public high school is Hanahan - have not heard great things about it. Many send their kids to private high school at Bishop England (on the island).

DI is very homogeneous. The entire island was developed at once so everything is brand new, which is very appealing. However, MP is closer to the beaches, has better restaurants, better shopping. I don't have children so I don't know much about the school system. However in terms of nice places to live in MP, check out The Sound subdivision at Hamlin Plantation in MP. It is one of the nicest neighborhoods in MP

Daniel Island is gorgeous with Beautiful newer homes. It is limited in what it offers in terms of day to day conveniences - supermarkets, shopping, restaurants, etc.

Mount Pleasant is very convenient to the beaches, the city, airport, etc. It has many conveniences, and within your home price range has a lot to offer in terms of real estate. I have small children (4yr. & 3 yr.)and chose Mount Pleasant based upon my review of the school reports in addition to general neighborhood research as this was extremely important to me.

I would recommend Mount Pleasant. The new Moultrie Middle School just opened a few days ago, we have a great high school - Wando and they are building a new elementary school on Rifle Range. There are nice affordable neighborhoods on Rifle Range. I believe that kids from Daniel Island have to go to schools in Berkley County. You want to stay in Charleston County for schools.

Either way you go Daniel Island and Mount Pleasant are two of the most desirable locations in Charleston. I personally enjoy the continence of Mount Pleasant and its location to downtown and the beaches.
