Such a skilled artisan, dedicated historian of works, and a kind man of few words.....I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Simmons when my class was visiting the Avery Institute one day 10 or so years ago. He took the time to answer my students' questions even though he was there for something else and he had the kindest eyes and smile I had ever seen. I thought, "there is a true angel on this earth...someone put here for a reason and he knew what that reason was and fullfilled his mission while here". I felt very honored to be in his presence. I have a deep appreciation for the arts, for history, and for tradition....Phillip Simmons stood for all these things - and was so humble about his fame. He will be missed by people around the world and it is so heartwarming that his descendents will be carrying on his legacy. I'm sure the gates of heaven will be so much more beautiful once Mr. Simmons adds his touch to them.

RIP Sir... may you see the whitest entrance gates you've ever seen while entering His kingdom!

I always heard he couldn't stand painting his gates black, or Charleston green... he wanted them all to be painted white... where his work would glow in the moonlight...

carolinajack he will be missed especially by ALL of us

At least the Charleston visitors bureau had the foresight to feature his work in the 45 minute film intro to Charleston (movie) that they play several times a day at the visitors center. I saw the movie for the first time a few years ago when visiting and then again recently when relatives were visting me here. If you haven't seen it it is well worth the dollar or two entrance fee....
