Are there Snakes in Mt. Pleasant...Please be honest!!
Hello all!! I have been reading this website almost daily since I am considering moving to the charleston area from central NJ (like so many others haha) My family and I have come to the conclusion that Mt. Pleasant would be the best fit for us. We are going to be renting for the first year and have found some complexes that fit our needs and almost all of our questions have been answered except for one. My family and I are def. NOT fans of snakes. I have read in previous threads about snakes in Summerville and even on James Island. I am just wondering if anyone can tell me specifically about Mt. P. I am aware of the gators and I am sure there are snakes and things alike in ponds and rivers, but what I am concerned about is seeing one on my balcony, near my front door, basically anywhere I would be in real close proximity to one. I know this might sound crazy or even being paranoid but I really would appericate the information. If I missed a thread where this information is, please tell me as well. Never hurts to have enough info right?? Thanks in advance for any information you can all give me.

There are snakes almost everywhere in the country. The closer you are to fresh water and a moist environment, the more likely you are to see snakes and bugs. The more urban an environment you are in, the less likely you are to see snakes. I am originally from central NJ and there are snakes there, too.

I live in the upstate and have even seen snakes on my 2nd floor deck. More snakes in the lowcountry than upstate. Sorry. You leave them alone they will leave you alone. They are by an large good creatures eating rats and the like.

Don't forget there are also lizards that look like miniature alligators. I've seen some about 8-10 inches long but most are only about half that size. I've seen lots of those. Two medium size ones even somehow got inside. My cat found them and I caught one of them and brought it back outside. Part of the other one my cat ate before I rescued it and brought it back outside. I only saw one snake since I got here a year and a half ago.

Snakes are shy for the most part. Usually, when you see a snake, he's got that oh crap pose going on because they don't like to be spotted by animal or man. Most of the time, when I see a snake, its a glimpse of the tail as it disappears under a bush. I don't care for snakes, personally... but I think the amount of attention garnered by them on this forum is way overblown. Hawai'i has no snakes. Great Britain has no snakes. Alaska has none. Most everywhere else, you'll find them sooner or later.

I live in Mount P and my yard backs to wetlands. We have seen tons of frogs, and even a crayfish once on our back lawn, but I have yet to see a snake in the year we have been in this house.
Not saying they do not exist, but I agree with the "they're more afraid of you sentiment"
