Default Torn between living downtown & Ion

My husband & I just got back from a week in Charleston and decided that this is where we want to move our family & raise our kids. We'll be moving from L.A. & have a 3yo & another on the way. Our fantastic realtor (who we found on this great message board) showed us about 20 houses in downtown & Ion (other places too, but these are our top 2 locations) and we fell in love with at least half of them.

I am just so torn though on how to choose which area to live in. We love the feel of living downtown with lots of energy, history, walkability, things to do - it's just such a vibrant city & we instantly felt at home. I believe most of the homes were in Harleston Village (Bennett, Smith, Beaufain). I was completely sold on living downtown until we visited Ion. I knew I was going to love it there from what I had seen and read online but after seeing the gorgeous houses (that wouldn't need any repair or renovating ) and getting a feel for the wonderful sense of family & community (which we are really looking for), I am completely confused and cannot decide.

I know we would be happy living in either place but since I've gotten such great advice on here I thought I'd ask.

Both are great areas but IMO Ion is a better fit for you. I have a three year old and a one year old myself. Ion is such a family oriented community with play parks and amenities to die for. And so many kids. You just can't go wrong! Downtown is great and without children I'd say go for it. Good Luck with your final choice!

Ion has the added benefit of not playing host to tourists from April to October. All other things being equal, that might play a part in your decision. I agree though, both are gorgeous! Good luck.

I just came back from 5 days in Charleston..
Looking to move our lil family there (8 month old)
My 2 cents are....
While downtown is really nice .. picturesque etc.
I would rather bring up our son in MP.
More open, playgrounds, amenities etc.
And I'on... right over the bridge anyway
I had lunch in I'on... very picturesque as well.
We are personally looking further out on 17.

Just my 2 cents...

Same as here in NYC...
While Manhattan is great... not a place to raise kids...
hence Downtown Charleston vs MP

Michael
Another Yankee (Brooklyn, NY) moving South to Charleston, with some questions1

Growing up downtown will certainly be a different experience from growing up in Mt Pleasant and ION. I personally would choose downtown as the history within the city is awe inspiring and interesting.

Families -- I'on would be more likely but you might like the eclectic life of downtown CHarleston. It would be different with the tourists, etc.
