In my opinion (and I say this so criticism can be kept to yourself), there is a huge difference between the north and south. I am from about as far north as you can go without living in Canada. I thought our state was backwoods and behind the times. We left to move to a warmer climate and get out of the snow.
We have now learned some differences between the north and south. Dont be different in the south, that includes being white, being from the north, being a hard worker, etc. You will be judged in every step you take. Racism is alive in the south. Don't expect your kids to be safe, especially in the schools, with the teachers, etc. My son was assaulted by 4 teachers in the school and he was only 8 at the time. (no he did not threaten or touch anyone, they grabbed him first) You have to be careful even stopping at a convenience store, the level of crime is high here. Don't expect fast service, everything is done slow here and if you try to speed it up you are considered rude. Don't expect not to have religion in your face 24/7, churches on every street corner, prayer at places of employment, and constant questioning of what church do you belong to and did you give money to your church. Don't believe the civil war actually ended, confederate flags and garbage are still actively used in the south.
So as we return to our home state.....we are doing it for the right reasons. We want our children to live a safe life, grow up to be open and receiving of everyone, to gain an excellent education, and learn how to be hard workers.
It is important for everyone considering such a drastic move, you can not change how you were raised and you can not change how other people were raised. It is important to consider for those that have kids, do you want them raised with your values or someone else's because no matter how much you continue your values in your home, what they will learn in school and in the community they live will be very powerful.
like this is not an insult! we have excellent schools in the south-some of the best in the country from Duke to Vandy, from Emory to UVA to Clemson and the college of charleston, UNC, etc.
in the south yes we ask what church you belong to, that is our way of getting to know you just as in the north you ask a person what job or what do you do for a living when you meet them. we were taught not to talk about money or peoples socio-econ status and you were taught not to talk about religion and politics(though northerners do all the time). im southern adn black livign up North and i can tell everyone here that the people are not any more open to people who are different. very few places are fully integrated up north and people will stare at blacks and other minorities and i cant remember a time going to a party that whites dont ask some of the most racist questions or ignorant questions about blacks.
boston was named the most racist city in america for along time, Pa and NJ and indiana are very open to the Klan and White Supremacist groups, there are as many racial incidences in the north as there are in the south, go to HATEWATCH
It is an insult because you have a habit of making judgmental, blanket statements about people who live in certain areas of the country based on geography and a few bad expreiences. You also make blanket statements about people's religious and political beliefs. You seem like a genuinely pleasant person, but your statement is divisive and hurtful because there are many devoutly religious people in the north, many non-rude people in the north, and there are also many people who lean to the left that aren't morons.

Your excellent schools landed my son in the hospital with injuries and they were done by teachers not other students. Your excellent schools are behind in math. Your excellent schools helped your Ms. South Carolina in what way?
Now I am not saying that every school in SC is bad. But we live in what is supposed to be the best district in the state, and that is where my son was harmed. There are also excellent teachers in this district, namely one inparticular that has done everything she could and can do to protect my son.
Besides being asked what church I belonged to, religion was forced upon me in my employment. I don't feel it's right to pray before meetings as I am not religious, but yet was made to. And don't say this must be a small company or such, I worked for the State of South Carolina.
There are differences, yes I am sure you will be glad I am gone and yes I will be glad to go.
I commented to just point out there are differences, not that one is wrong or right, but yet we were all raised different and it's ok to consider what you value. If you noted, I commented that you have to stick by what you value and don't rely on just being able to shelter your children once they leave the house. If you live in a community with different beliefs, then that is what your children will be exposed to.
In the end, thank you for proving me right. Some people of South Carolina are quick to judge without using their "excellent" education to see a different point of view.
Kids can get hurt, bullied in any school anywhere in the world. It happens. Sometimes it is the fault of the administration, sometimes it isn't. It isn't a southern thing...it's something that happened to your son.
Psst -- I'm more northern than you are so don't get on my southern case.....I'm from Canada eh,

I am not sure why people can't seem to read english here. My son was not bullied. He was physically grabbed and assaulted by the teachers and administration people. Yes it can happen anywhere, but it never happened where we lived.
And Psst.....I don't consider you northerner, last I knew Canada was not part of the North or South United States. Check a map.
Rudeness seems to be common place here. One can't voice their opinions without getting completely harassed. As far as I am concerned I am done with this topic, conversation, etc. If you want to continue to voice your stupidity, hate, etc., please do.
Hi malaf! Com'on down!! I know you'll love the area!!! After I visited 3 pharmacy schools & was accepted by all 3, I decided I wanted the best education I knew I could get was from MUSC in Charleston. After 1 year, I knew the Charleston/Summerville area was where I wanted to plant my roots! I've NEVER regretted my move! Again, com'on down, you'll love it when you get to know all of the areas surrounding Charleston!
PS: gurnzen, I sure do not know where you have been, maybe I've lived a sheltered life...NO! I HAVEN'T! I've been in the retail sector & know that you may get a "BUTT" in their once & a while, but I just haven't had as much racism as I've read at this moment! Take a CHILL PILL! Calm down a bit, relax and think about what you've just started....I'm glad I never (or I may have, who knows?) been your RXist!!

Reason: I left out a sentence
Okay -- physical aggression can happen anywhere -- it's not a southern thing-- it's happened at schools all over north america and the world.
I made the silly comment about being northern than you because --- well first I am more northern -- and second because I didn't want you to think that my opinion was based on any deep rooted southern affiliation.
I am truly sorry your son was physically attacked. It isn't a southern thing. You can blame it on your physical location but that's not it. Bullying -- and yes a physical attack on someone is bullying -- happens every where -- if you want I can google attacks and come up with a few incidents in the north of the USA, if you need, to show you that attacks happen anywhere.

that would be true if the devoutly religious people spoke up and not let the region be solely controlled by the secular and the non rude people stood up for good manners and behavior. also if the judgemental behaviors of many northerners across this entire city data website werent so apparent against southerners, rebel flags, grits, race relations, education, etc. But when people like the gentleman who said he is moving back north and disparaged the south as having no education, being religious and loving the civil war and and are divisive then people of good will have to speak up-whether they are from the north or south and say that is judgemental. when bad people attack southerners for being too conservative, making blanket statements and judging them baced on their political views and religious views and attack conservatives and southerners as racists when racism happens just as much up north, then good people need to speak up and out against the judgemental and attacking statements.
if there are left leaning people who are not judgemental, hateful people thats a good thing but sadly they dont speak up for right against wrong, or try and stop the blanket attacks against people of different regions then sadly its hard so see if they arent morons.
since i didnt start the thread, i wouldnt be the judgmental person but rather a person defending people of the south from being attacked by judgemental people like the gentleman from close to the Canadian border.

One school and you blame all of the schools in the south? Hmmmmm, then i guess the murder at Yale would make all Ivy league Universities the most anti Asian , racist and dangerous places in the North. There was an incident at a bar in canada where black men were attacked for talking to white women and the two men were barred from going to bars in that city. hmmm does that make all of Canada racist? i wouldnt think so but by your logic it would.
seems like your judgement on SC and schools and the other statements you made is quick to judge people and their different beliefs. schools in the north force their Secularism and political correctness, so much so that i cant send my child to a gov run school in Pennsylvania because of the indoctrination and if you do follow what they say kids get suspended, talked down to by teachers. as for the job if you dont feel its right then sure dont work at a place like that, i dont "feel" its right NOT to pray at work or in school so i could say the same thing for northern and canadian schools.
all the blanket judgements on SC are clearly more than just statements but clear attacks on peoples beliefs, and values. most people know that the south is a very conservative part of the country and prepare themselves for the cultural differences just as a southerner should know that the liberalism of the north will be a part of their culture. if one goes to china or argentina or ghana and thinks the culture is going to be just like it is in boston or detroit, buffalo, plattsburg or Toronto then it means they are culturally ignorant and want to force their culture on the new place. that doesnt sound liberal or progressive that sounds like colonialization
