Toronto is a great city. Dam those winters -- it is a phenomenal city. I know I've lived there......just can't hack those winters.

Pffft.

Two words: Abner Louima.

Two more: Joseph Holladay. (not racial, but still a hate crime)

a few more: Giuliani and Bloomberg's racist policies.

And gosh, that's just in NYC. That leaves quite a bit of geography to cover north of the Mason-Dixon Line.
And though NY admittedly may lag behind in Klan members, they're growing in the Midwest and Western states. And the KKK are hardly the only (or even the foremost) racist group around.

- The North is more liberal. Pro gay marriages, accepting of abortions, blah blah. There is a different kind of culture up there. I have visited the states of PA, NYC (Manhattan), and Maryland, so these things I have experinced first hand. Not trying to talk bad about these find states, or anywhere in the northeast.

The accents are different. When I go up North, no one can understand me. I literally have to repeat myself 7 to 8 times in order to get a person up there to understand me. I have a strong southern accent. Not sure if any other southerners experince this.

The rudeness is unbelievable. No one holds the door for you, people always seem like they are in a hurry to get someplace, cashiers at the stores are rude, and the aggressive drivers make me dread driving anywhere in the northeast. There are rude people everywhere not just limited to the northeast.

When northerners move down south they expect things to be just like what they were in NY, MD, CT, PA, etc. And are disapointed and complain when they find out that the culture shock was too much for them. There was a couple from Boston, MA who moved to my town last year. I was a good neighbor, greeted them when they came, made them a fresh sweet potato pie, and even invited them for supper once they had got settled in. We actually had became great friends. However 6 months later the house they were in as marked up for sale. I called them to ask why would they move so quickly and without warning these are the reasons that they have given me:

1. The Heat - I'm used to the heat and humidity of the south. They weren't apparently. They expected a warmer climate. Instead they got a HOT & HUMID climate. Not what they were expecting. This was a silly reason to move, I figured.

2. Culture - According to these folks they were tired of being asked what church do you belong to. Church is very important where I live, and people expect you to take care of the community and attend church. In the south, we hold strong in our Christain beliefs, and invite those who are willing to listen to become saved as well. When I met someone new, I ask what church do they belong to? Or if they would be interested in visiting my church? I don't see how one could be offended by this. If they are not interested they should just simply say " I am not interested, thank you for the offer though" They explained that people are Bible thumping everywhere, from outside of grocery/conveince stores to community gatherings. I see no problem with this either.
They just found out that they weren't into hunting, fishing, boating etc. (People do these activities everywhere so I don't see as to how this would just be included with the south.) The amount of bugs and other critters were annoying to them. Hello If your moving to ANY country area prepare to see bugs and other little critters to be in and out of your house, outside, just about everywhere.
One of their biggest pet peeves was about the confederate flag. I don't see it as offensive, I take pride in it as it represents the south and our way of life. I am a black woman, and i can see how other blacks would be offended by it. My husband is white and has the confederate flag on his truck. It is more of a pride symbol, not "THE SOUTH WANTS TO ENSLAVE BLACK PEOPLE" sort of thing.

3. Slow pace of life - They all agreed that the south was just a boring place to live. Nothing happens and it's just too "country" for them. Like that is a bad thing? They are plently of bars, casinos, clubs, etc in Atlanta and other southern cities. And if your that bored I would just suggest reading a book, plant a garden, feed the birds, it's not like you are five years old. Another complaint was that they did not approve how pets are handled in the south. Most of our neighbors let their dogs run free, we have never had any problems. The wife of the family was terrified of dogs and would'nt go outside if she heard a dog barking. Not saying that all people in the south handle their pets like this ( we have a big fenced open yard for our dogs)
They wanted a SLOWER pace of life and they sure got it. They weren't prepared to how "slow" grocery store lines move because we southerners can't help but strike up a friendly conversation with one another. Nobody is in a rush and I don't see why they would need to be. I would'nt call northerners antisocial, but they seem to be less open to other people and less likely to converse with people that they do not know.

4. Nosy neighbbors - I wasn't trying to be nosy, just wanted to be a good neighbor as that was how I was raised to treat people. I treat people with respect, and respect their privacy. As I would want others to do unto me. They found it creepy that everyone waves to them, and strange that we treat everyone like family here in our town. This could just be the culture shock. But it made them feel out of place kind of.

All in all it just wasn't a place where they would of wanted to raise their children.

Again, i am not saying that Northeasterners are like this and/or complain alot. This was just my experience. I still keep in contact with these folks who are happy to call the Northeast their home and I will call the South mine.

HEat & humidity is why I wanted to move to Georgia from Canada. And the people who complain the most about the heat & humidity here in the ATL are the southerners. Gosh darn it -- love the heat, the humidity, the sun and the blue sky. It's glorious.

It's only 62 degrees here -- brr. I can't take those locals that say they are glad for the cool weather. We can have cool weather in January and February -- right now I want some southern fall days -- 75+ and hot and sunny.

amen sister, i am a fellow black south carolinian and i hear you 100%. did they not do their homework before moving down south? everyone one knows its hot, that it has alot of rural areas, that their are bugs like there are in all rural areas. if they went to downtown charleston they wouldnt experience bugs. that rural areas are big on hunting, fishing, and other outdoor sports, just like it is in Oregon, Maine, Washington State, Pennslyvania, New York, etc. people hunt all over and fish all over.

so they enjoyed the rude, ill mannered behavior of the north? well good riddance, you sound like a great neighbor to live next to/ my wife is caucasian and child is adopted from China, we enjoy the south all it offers us. I dont blink twice seeing a confederate flag, anymore than a yankee does seeing a gay rainbow flag
