The South is not as homogeneous as most outsiders think. Different areas of a state have different vibes, different people, and different economies. Do your research - there is a place for you. Maybe it's Charleston, but maybe it isn't. Best of luck!

I've said this before in one of the other numerous threads which discussed this same subject. My family and I were not trying to take anything away from "Natives" when we decided to move here. It is a beautiful area and a great place to live. We are simply trying to better our lives and those of our young children.
I don't quite understand the rationale behind the whole Yankee/Damn Yankee thing, but whatever. Not gonna lose any sleep over it. Same goes for the "Native" stickers. I think it just seperates people even more.
As far as the driving thing, there are bad drivers EVERYWHERE. Pretty sure that all the bad drivers here didn't come from NY. Lol.

I'm already committed to Charleston for better or for worse...as the as the heat and humidity don't kill me, I'm sure it'll at least be tolerable.
Predictably, this thread degenerated in a hurry...

Well, Starry.. maybe it's because we'd like to live in a real house, in a decent neighborhood that's safe and have a bit more than 1000sf.
$120-150k is about the average price of a mediocre condo/ or a postage stamp LOT down there.. maybe a small house N of summerville.
You must be extremely indiscriminate about where you live. Do you live in that price range?
Maybe that is the problem.. We've had custom houses built after transfers and moving about and are maybe a bit too discriminate. Cookie-cutters are, well cookie-cutters.
You're really full of yourself aren't you? Is this where we are suppose to applaud your great success in life?? Lady, I hate to tell you, but you are not 'that' unique. You did not work any harder than most *professionals* normally do to make advancements, and you are NOT the only one who made plenty of *sacrifices* along the way (we had no parents, much less grandparents, and have a disabled child.. so don't lecture me on sacrifices).
You actually believe you were granted your fortunate circumstances because you simply "made the choice", worked hard and sacrificed??? IT'S BECAUSE YOU MOVED HERE FROM THE NORTH.. PERIOD.
And that's the whole point.
Here's the way it is.. YOU were fortunate to move there, not because of anything outstanding you did, but because "the cost of living was SO much lower" and it was a win-win situation for you.
So you, my northern friend, have pilfered and profited, just as the Carpetbaggers of yore.
|
Are you out of your ever-loving mind? Lady, I'm not here to explain the minute details of my life to you, nor economics. We bought a house down here in Ashborough, which anyone down here could tell you how gorgeous this neighborhood is, cookie cutter my foot. I'm not here to gloat - I feel fortunate and blessed that we were able to buy a house that sold for almost $400k two Novembers ago for well under $200k. I'll be laughing about you as I clean up my 2500+ sqft brick home with 100 year old trees on its almost half acre lot today, "ma'am."
I haven't relied on ANY parental support for over 14 years - not for college, not for housing, not to give me food when I was starving when out of work when doing grad school. I have paid my way - including a $40K wedding that WE paid for - without anybody's help.
We moved down south because after quite a few years of working up north for PEANUTS - engineers are a dime a dozen - and watching people with experience get the shaft so they can hire fresh-outs from college with no experience for $40k a year - a wonderful company IN CHARLESTON approached my husband, grilled him in countless interviews over the phone and in person for over a month, and asked him to relocate. Opportunity knocked, and we were fortunate that the city who wanted him was this beautiful one.
We were thrilled to see that the cream rises to the top in Charleston, at least for engineers who are worth their salt. In fact, my husband got a perfect (yes, perfect) evaluation yesterday because of his outstanding (typical for him) work performance and got a raise that made his jaw drop. Enough to make up the difference between what we were paying in rent to what we now pay on this mortgage plus renovations. And I say, thank you Charleston, for rewarding the hard workers who studied hard in school, continued with their education, and worked hard ever since. I'm quite grateful for the opportunities that the South has provided - this sort of thing doesn't happen up north, because people would rather hire lots of cheap labor instead of a few brilliant employees. Call it gloating - I'm proud of him, and proud of his job for recognizing his work, especially at his age. He more than deserves it. I brought it up only because you are under the impression that I'm getting a hand-out - never gotten one in my life, dear. My student loans can help attest to that.
So yes, my dear - we were ASKED, by SOUTHERNERS, to come down here - and these same Southerners want us to stay for a good long time. I like them very much, in fact I like every local I've met, including the girls at the supermarket who chat with me whenever I go, my husband's coworkers who have been more than welcoming to us, and the random strangers, who are willing to be helpful and kind to a girl from The Bronx who was quite overwhelmed at moving down here.
Amazingly the only nasty one I've encountered is, well... let's just say I'm glad you can't afford to live down here. And mods, if you consider these personal attacks, please check this thread from the beginning.
As for City Data - I know I've mentioned it before, but thank you too, northerners and locals alike. I've gotten (and used) advice about home insurance, neighborhoods, places to eat and see, weekend tours of the state, even a great contractor who I am using from here. I'm glad (and proud!) I share a wonderful city like this with you.
Edit: My name, Starry Eyed Surprise - is the title of a wonderful song. Amazing at the things one can read into.

Typical of your age group
|
I think this comment sums up this poster very well.
Allow "this age group" to retort.
I'm all for being held accountable. This is an extraordinary concept coming from the keyboard of someone from "this age group." I'm held accountable for the skyrocketing cost of living throughout this country due to the embarrasingly immature spending habits of the "older age group."
Somehow, the days of "spend what you can afford" and "live within your means" went out the window in the 80s and 90s when "your age group" started to want a new car every 5 years, and bigger homes, and investment properties and you wanted someone else to pay for your medical bills and your prescriptions and your retirement benefits.
"Your age group" was holding the reins on this country for the past few decades. "Your age group" ran this country into the ground. "Your age group" decided not to be held accountable.
Just as I am sure that the poster dislikes being stereotyped with these broad comments about their age group, I'm sure myself (and many others) don't want to be stereotyped either.
As for the damn yankee comments:
I say to you, go live in a more diverse area for a few years. You will come to learn that while many places up North are truly a melting pot, you will also find that the traditions of various cultures strive.
New York City is a great example. If you walk down Mulberry street, you are in Little Italy. Their culture thrives there. You walk one street over, there is Chinatown. Walk a few blocks north, Koreatown, etc etc. In areas of Chicago, there are many Eastern European communities.
Intolerance is ignorance.

Oy!! Can't we all just get along???
I find it hard to believe that anyone on this particular thread is a true native, and by true native I mean just that, Native Americans that were here long before any settlers came to this wonderful city. So, unless that is true for any one of y'all arguing with eachother, some where along the lines of your family history, someone at some time came here to benefit from this wonderful place I am proud to call home. Personally the "benefit" we came here for was the weather, and lack of snow. The housing prices were just a perk!!
I am a northern yankee living in Charleston, and I am also proud of that. I find it endearing when someone calls me a Yankee, unless of course it is preceeded by Damn, or followed up by Bless Your Heart, thankfully I have not been on the receiving end of either of those comments.

If you say so, Miss Know-it-All.. Find me something and I'll buy it if it fits the parameters and is half-way decent.[/quote]
Address: 2974 Joseph Glover Ave. MT. PLEASANT, SC
5 bedroom, 3.5 bath
3100 square feet on 1 acre lot
PRICE; $204,000
Built 1998
I don't know the area - but I would imagine this just isn't "good" enough for you since you only live in custom built homes.
There you are - there's your house - it can be done, you just want MORE than you can afford -- CHOICES!
