Default Charleston ranks #4 in best cities in the US and Canada

Yep, Travel and Leisure Magazine just came out with the Top 10 Cities in the US and Canada, and Charleston, SC came in at #4. Not bad, Charleston!

See the article at: Travel + Leisure

Then click on the 'cities' tab, then click on the 'Continental US & Canada' tab.

NY, San Francisco, and Quebec City beat us out for the #1, #2, and #3 spots.

Charleston, South Carolina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Crime
The following table shows Charleston’s crime rate in 6 crimes that Morgan Quitno uses for their calculation for "America's most dangerous cities" ranking, in comparison to the national average. The statistics provided are not for the actual amount of crimes committed, but how many crimes committed Per Capita.[22]

CrimeCharleston, South Carolina (2007)National AverageMurder12.86.9Rape50.332.2Robbery244.1195.4A ssault515.6340.1Burglary676.5814.5Automobile Theft1253.8391.3

Since 1999, the overall crime rate of Charleston has begun to decline. The total crime index rate for 1999 was 597.1 crimes committed per 100,000 civilians. the United States Average is 320.9 (Per Capita). Charleston had a total crime index rate of 430.9 per 100,000 residents for the year of 2007.
According to the Congressional Quarterly Press '2008 City Crime Rankings: Crime in Metropolitan America, Charleston, South Carolina ranks as the 124th most dangerous city larger than 75,000 inhabitants.[23][24] However, the entire Charleston-North Charleston Statistical Metropolitan Area had a much higher overall crime rate ranking at #21.[25"

Note: Crime rates nationwide have declined since the late 90's (but have began to rise again (property crimes in specific) since the 2007 Depression).

Reason:

An population that is growing older, and hence, less likely to commit crime.

"Friendly" as the Japanese are "friendly", if you know both cultures.

But as far as historical sites, and grabbing a bite and a snooze at a upscale hotel, Charleston is indeed one of the best in the SE US.
