Default John's Island....

Tell me a little about John's Island please.
What's it like, population, accessibility, etc... I have heard some things about the area that makes me unsure about it but I want to hear it from you all.

Thanks!

John's Island, or John Island as it is called by the locals.....

It is a rural near beach area, that has lots of woods and sand marsh....

Property prices near the water are very high, schools are not that great and it is a laid back place to live....

We don't have kids so that isn't as important to us as other factors.
Would you compare it with FB?

Very rural, slow paced, a few places to dine. Beautiful oak-lined streets, quiet, 20 minute drive to downtown. Definitely laid-back.

Thanks for the info....

we are going to be down soon for several days to really start narrowing things down. Once we do that, I will call the PD's and check with them on stats and other concerns we have.

I moved from James Island to Johns Island 15 years ago and love it. It is laid back and quiet for the most part. I love sitting on my porch in the early morning and late in the evening listening to nothing but all kinds of birds, crickets, cicadas, and my wind chimes when there is a breeze. There are some nice new subdivisions out here, if you like living in a neighborhood, and there is lots of land left if you prefer rural living. I live on a little over an acre and have nothing but thick woods across the street from me and LOVE not being bothered by neighbors and being able to go outside in my PJ's and no one being able to see me. LOL
The only downfall, in my eyes, is the poor quality of the schools out here....but since that isn't an issue for you, no worries. We have some really good restaurants now: Fat Hen, Wild Olive, Maria's, Hickory Hawg, JB's Smokeshack, JI's Pizza, Gilligans, a new coffee/Internet shop (don't know the name), and some fast food places. We have a large park w/ballfields and tennis courts, Charleston Tea Plantation, Angel Oak, Irvin's Vinyards & Winery, and close access to Kiawah (Beachwalker County Park, Freshfields, Newton's Market, etc.), Seabrook Island, and Bohicket Marina (where there are more good restaurants and shops).
Grocery Stores: We have Food Lion (the nicest one I have been to....I usually don't like Food Lion) and a nice Piggly Wiggly, then we also have a new Harris Teeter going in as well. Earth Fare, Publix, and other grocery stores are just 15 minutes away on James Island, in South Windermere, and at the corner of Hwy. 17 and Main Rd.

We are only 20 minutes from downtown and West of the Ashley (shopping, Citadel Mall, restaurants, movies, bowling, etc)...so we aren't isolated.

It is relaxing and quiet on Johns Island....and there is still a small-community feel to it. I can't go in the post office or grocery store without seeing at least one or two people I know.

Hope this helps give you a local's perspective on Johns Island.

ChromeKitty,

Just joined to ask a question about the real estate market right now on Johns Island and thought I would take a minute to repond to you. We still own a house in The Villages in St. John's Woods on Johns Island (friend me if you'd like pics or more info) but unfortunately and fortunately are currently living in the UK. I would def. check out this neighborhood while you are down there great amenities, great houses, lovely people. We loved Johns Island for everything that SCBeaches said. The island is charming and friendly diverse and close to the beach and downtown. I still think you get more house for your money then some other areas and we just loved it.

Fried Okra
