Camden, SC is close to both Columbia and Hartsville and not far from Charlotte.

Hartsville is sort of a suburb of Florence, where I spent much of my childhood. You'll be near the Darlington raceway. Florence has grown a great deal and is commutable to Hartsville; the only real hospital in the area is also in Florence; McLeod has taken over the town, nearly. When I was born there, it was a little three story building near Timrod Park, which is the home of the one room schoolhouse once presided over by South Carolina's first poet laureate. The best barbecue in the area is also in Florence on what we call "the old Pamplico Highway", an extension of Second Loop Road. Cain's has been serving BBQ since my mother was a child; the founder, Woodrow Cain, was a friend of my grandfather's. We pick up BBQ anytime we have reason to go anywhere near Florence and the restaurant is still in the Cain family, though Woody is long gone. Columbia is less than two hours from Hartsville, which is probably two hours from Charleston as well.
