Golf in Summerville area
We have been to the Charleston (Summerville) area several times over the past few years. We are now retiring and seems the Summerville area is most affordable ($250-300,000) for the size home we want. BUT, we are golfers and would like any recommendations, especially a rating on the golf courses (and the neighborhood they are in). We also are concerned about traffic and the driving traffic/time to Trident Tech for our son, Medical facilities (would be nice) and the beach--lol--no way finding anything making that accessible! I heard Wescott is getting a proposed "connector" thru the plantation to alleviate traffic on Dorchester Rd--good/bad? We tentatively plan to rent for a few months to get a feel for all these concerns, but I would rather buy. We've checked out Legend Oaks (like it a lot, but Hwy 61 all the way downtown and 165 only way out?), Wescott (lots of homes for sale?) Crowfield (most convenient, but 17 "neighborhoods"?) Weatherstone, Liberty Hall, Tanner Plantation (will they ever put a bridge over Goose Creek--or Hwy 61?), Buckshire (now how convenient is that for to just about anything, but have not heard a word about it on the forum--yet). Well, I know I'm picky, but this is a BIG decision. Would appreciate any input, esp. on the golf.

As everyone knows on this forum.........I am a Legend Oaks fan! We live in the neighborhood and love it! The golf course is wonderful. My husband is an avid golfer and thinks this course is great....for the money! Hwy 61 is the best route to get to West Ashley and Charleston. To get to downtown Summerville Hwy 165 is the most common way..........but my husband and I use the back way if it is around 5:00. The traffic gets really backed up at the 165-Dorchester light. We love this area as it is a great mix of retirees and young families..........at least that is how it is in the Pointe section (older section) of the neighborhood. We love that we are close to Charleston and Summerville and still are 'out of the way' from the main hub of it all...........Mainly Dorchester rd. I just can't stand driving on the road. Just my opinion!!!! Good luck. Let me know if I can answer any other questions about this neighborhood!

Yep, it's me again--you've been helpful previously. I've scoured my map and can't find any other way...what is the "back way" you speak of? I can't find anything except 165 or 61!
While you are the "expert" on Legend Oaks, the club has a pool I presume. Are there any walking trails or do you just walk on the street? My husband walks and "needs" hills for a good workout...I don't really expect any hills there tho. My son is not a seasoned driver (few months) but he will be going to Trident Tech--then maybe on to College of Charleston and he avoids traffic as much as he can (back ways). My life dream has been to live on the beach and wake up and drink my coffee on the beach...but that dream won't be realized. And from experience, I'm not sure the beach is all that accessible, as we have gone to Sullivan Island, Isle of Palms, and the parking is pretty scarce. Almost seems as tho the beach is moot now, as I know a half hour drive is something I don't like to do regularly. We drive to Atlanta (25 miles) maybe once a month for shopping/lunch.
But, that aside, we have looked at and BOTH really like the Beazer "Palmer" home. There is one to be completed Aug/Sep (buyers couldn't sell their home) at 122 Gathering Island Rd. I'd like a big yard, but....and privacy...apparently there is a pond on a common area behind it and can put up a 4-ft fence (for outdoor cat), but I really like a woodsy back area. Have you seen it? We are coming out week after next to take a look around again and maybe try out golf courses. I hate to let it get away, but don't want to make a boo-boo and find I don't like living in close proximity. Do you have a problem with the small yards? I'm also torn between an existing home, with the chance of a bigger yard, and a new home on one of those small lots.
Well, I've got oodles of research yet to do (I'm pretty thorough--to the point of exasperation) and will probably have more questions! How about apartments in the Summerville area? We will be looking at those too.
Thanks again!

No, not any hills in the Lowcountry! There are no walking trails but the neighborhood has quiet streets and a 2mile circle that everyone walks.
As far as the back way............I am not going to name every street. But, if you take a left out of the main entrance, go to the stop sign, take a right and then go on Orangeburg rd or use US alt 17. THis is only when traffic is backed up on 165. Believe me, there are tons of back roads in these southern areas........

Oh, sorry...........yes, there is a pool and tennis courts. I do not know anything about apartments in the area. Sorry. The beach is a 45 minute drive.
