TX2NOVA is on a distinguished road
Default moving to DC/VA...

My husband has orders to Bolling AFB. We have 2 boys. While one is homeschooled, the other is going into his Junior yr in public school. I've been looking at the Herndon/Reston area for single family home rentals. I'm not finding much. We will be there the beginning of Aug. We do not want to rent a apt or townhouse. Although I'm starting to think we won't have a choice.
Are there family homes available for rent?

We want to live in the Herndon HS area as so far it is one of the few schools with JROTC. Others are in Alexandria and we can't afford those. My son is very into JROTC and would be even more upset about this move if we can't find a place for him.

Any help?

Thanks!

check the military rental sites. (military member who own homes here and rent within the military community)
You'll have to search google because I don't know the websites someone here here will hopefully chime in.... (military moves .com??)

You shouldn't have a problem finding a rental in Herndon. just look closely at the neighborhoods....some are not very desirable.
Have you checked the local papers? washington Post etc... I know here in Leesburg they are lisited in our local paper, I don't know if Herndon has a local paper.

BTW some of the TH are VERY nice and big as a last resort it's not that bad of an option here.

Check craigslist! Http://dc.craigslist.com (broken link)

I found my lovely little apartment there (along with most of my furniture) and I couldn't be happier. There are many home rentals as well.

I know Herndon HS may have a ROTC program, but they also have their share of problems and I know several families who moved to Loudoun County to get their kids out before they got to Herndon HS (Fairfax county). Fairfax has some great schools, but they are farther south than Herndon which would make for a longer drive to Bolling. There is really no easy commute there.

i don't think you'll have a choice to be in an apt or th. you should check out alexandria city. 3 br apts and townhomes won't be too hard to find. sfh's are really expensive but a th or apt wont be that expensive. TC Williams has a great ROTC program and a new gorgeous facility opens up in fall. there are affordable properties in alexandria city you just have to look very hard. commuting to bolling will be a lot easier than herndon or reston as alexandria is right next to the ww bridge and SE DC. what is your rent range?

a few 3 br rentals

Check out www.militarybyowner.com. That should be a big help for you. Another site you may want to look at is www.marriedtothearmy.com. And even www.vajoe.com might be of some help. If you need any other help I might be able to help you through my website. I will just need the zip code of the area you would like to be in. Good luck!

I would also check out www.homesdatabase.com . It has the most accurate listing information for sales and rental properties in the area.

Hayfield High School in Fairfax County has a JROTC program and would be a better commute to Bolling. It is very close to Fort Belvoir so you would have easy access to the commissary and other conveniences. I don't know how it works but there are military families here who rent their homes to other military families through some kind of rental service through Ft. Belvoir. You'll see a picture of the JROTC on the school's home page: http://www.fcps.edu/HayfieldSS/
Good luck to you! Sounds like you have a nice family.

thanks onevthokie, that was the site I was thinking about...(military by owner)

I would try to find something in TC Williams district if you can...EXCELLENT SCHOOL!! And the commute would be soooo much better from that area.

Herndon would be a long commute.

husband will actually be working in Falls Church. The official base we'll be assigned to is Bolling but he will not work there.
Housing allowance is $2050 I think.

It may just be that Herndon is a Naval JROTC but my son's NJROTC said they had a good program. They've been to Nationals and they had heard of them. His current school makes it to nationals almost yearly. He's really into it. He's a great kid, a leader not a follower, Pre-AP andAP courses and already has college plans, contacts and scholarships coming in as a Sophmore.

thanks for the info, I'll check out the other school you mentioned.
