look, i am not trying to "smear" your neighborhood. i am not even talking about your community. i am talking about a few miles outside of the area i drove through was seemed very bad, and not so nice as a first impression being there. i drove through the whitehall community looking for something, and then the area around it... an dit just did not feel great to me. you like it, it is your home. great. you have your thoughts on it, and i have mine. i was just sharing my impression of my drive through the area. it did not feel safe to me. it is nothing personal, so relax. i just really do not like north charleston, in the dozen times i have been there, overall it is not as nice as the other areas i have seen down here so far. that's it.

I agree rmart and S2000...that should be in their job description, not just to sell you a house!

I like North Charleston. I have a house in Wescott, which is listed as "Summerville," but my parents live 4 miles away in Coosaw Creek, which is listed as "North Charleston." I think the Ashley Phosphate/Dorchester Road area is very nice. Whitehall, Archdale, Windsor Hill, and such are nice neighborhoods with good schools & amenities close by. The price is much better too, because so many people are prejudiced against North Charleston. (Insert disparaging comment here to fuel the hate between my neighborhood and yours.)
The person who asked about these areas requested a rental in the 600-700 price range with some amenities. The likelihood that they are going to reach that price limit in West Ashley, James Island, or Mount Pleasant is slim.. unless they want roommates.
I would suggest looking Hanahan, Goose Creek, Summerville, and yes, North Charleston. There are a lot of nice areas in each of these towns. There are some less desirable areas as well. If you find a property, I will be happy to give you the number to the local police to check it out.

What do you think of Summerville for a family moving down from Mass.

Yes, Summerville is very family friendly, better overall schools for the area and less expensive than MtP.

I've seen good neighborhoods go bad over the years and I've seen bad neighborhoods clean up. If enough good people move into a bad neighborhood, it can be turned around. There are bad areas all over the Tricounty region. Mt Pleasant, Goose Creek, Moncks Corner, Summerville, Lincolnville, North Chuck, James Island, John's Island, Downtown Charleston... etc, etc. They all have areas that can be considered "undesirable"... although I think sometimes people here have a tendency to confuse poor with dangerous.
This is my home and always has been. Some changes are encouraging, such as the area around North Charleston High School, and others are depressing, as I have seen around my old High School, Garrett. Nevertheless, it does no good to belittle one community in an attempt to raise the appeal of another. It is well to take pride in your community, but I encourage you to take pride in all the areas of the Charleston Community because we are all neighbors.

Well stated. Every area/town has some nice and some less desireable neighborhoods....even Mt. Pleasant. People just need to drive around and get a feel for the type of neighborhood they want to live in when shopping for real estate, rather than depending on the opionins of others. I would stop and ask people who actually LIVE in a neighborhood about how safe it is or what the neighbors are like. Checking police stats is helpful too.
North Charleston DOES have some nice neighborhoods (contrary to popular belief)....I would love to live in Coosaw Plantation, for example.
