Hi,

I am a 40-something, single, White, RN, with no children. I am considering a move to a warmer climate. I currently live on L.I., which is expensive, snowy and crowded, but I have to move. I would appreciate any advice regarding the job situation for RN's (I work for an HMO), the quality of life, housing, etc. I have heard that Hilton Head, SC is very nice, but I do not have a million $ budget. Please help me to figure it out! Thank you!!!

Charleston having such a large medical base, I can't imagine RN's do badly here at all. I'd check in with some of the hospitals and schools, MUSC, Roper, Charleston School of Nursing, etc. School of Nursing

If you plan on moving to CHS, have a job in place before making the move...especially in the nursing field.

Most folks think that nurses have it easy around here. It's not.

My fiance is an 8+ year RN specializing in critical care. She's been trying to find a job in the Charleston area for nearly a year now. We recently spoke to another RN (a stranger we met in a fast food restaurant) that said she had 17 years experience. It took her over a year also.

Another friend of ours is a Rad Tech and had no job offers for over a year (although she is now employed).

Moral of the story is to not take the abundance of hospitals around Charleston for granted. It isn't easy to find jobs. Many of the facilities hire new grads at reduced rates instead of experienced nurses.

You will no doubt find better paying jobs down around Hilton Head/Hardeville/Beaufort. You already know about HH, but be sure to check out Coastal Carlina and Beaufort Memorial down that way.

The pay in CHS is not as good as it is elsewhere.

Thank you for the information! I agree, everyone thinks that RN's have no problem finding jobs. NOT TRUE! New grad RN's are hired on the cheap, just like with other industries. The job market is bad all over....

I was just wondering what your impression of Hilton Head was....for someone that is in their 40's, unmarried, with no children, do you think it would be a good fit? Anyone that has any experience living there, I would LOVE to hear, I am thinking long-term, as in when I get a bit older, and I want to be in a warm, friendly, safe area. Possibly buying a condo, on HHI, ant ideas about what part of the island is best? THANK YOU!!

Summer777, my fiance has worked at HH some years ago while living in Beaufort. She's knocked out on NyQuil right now. I'll try to get her on to talk to you...might be tomorrow, though.
